PLEASANT VALLEY SCHOOL, NO. 14
,
1876--
Pleasant Valley "was a school
established in 1876*, and named by Daniel Babb, a Baptist preacher
and an uncle of Mrs. Broce Oglesby, who attended school there when
she was seven years old. Pleasant Valley probably got its name from the view."
[*According to the Hamilton County School
Annual, 1936, the first school at Pleasant Valley was built in
1860. Other sources place Daniel Babb at Pleasant Valley in
1877--but not in 1876.
The third
school established in Hamilton County was the one taught by J.
Griffith in his home near Leon
River east of Hamilton, Griffith was
killed by Indians 9 February, 1860, thus ending the school.]
The
first school was a windowless one room log cabin with a fireplace
across one end. About 1896 the log school was replaced with a wooden
structure which was remodeled in 1921.
A second room was added in 1925. Pleasant
Valley provided instruction for students in seven grades in 1911. In
1924-25 Owen Dutton taught in this school and Dennis Payne
and J. C. Courtney were on the school board. Teachers in 1936 were Bradley
Gardner, principal; and Miss Rose Marie Courtney, and trustees
were Albert Greater, Dennis Payne, and Robert
Koen. Owen A. Dutton also taught
at Pleasant Valley.
