JAMES MURRAY RODDY
STANDARD MUTUAL LIFE INSURANCE ASSOCIATION
Jim Roddy, a Texan came from Williamson county with his
parents when a small boy and was reared at Shive, an outlying township of
Hamilton.
His father, Joseph Berry Roddy, was born in 1832, when
Texas was a Republic under Mexico, was active in the development of the
affairs of his community. His mother, Elizabeth Jane Murray, was a member
of a prominent family of South Carolina and was a leader in the social
life of her home town.
Jim Roddy married Miss Maud Ragsdale, a daughter of E.
M. Ragsdale and Catherine Worker Ragsdale.
Jim Roddy’s first venture in business what the Drug
business at Shive. After a few years, he moved to Hamilton and was
engaged in the lumber interests for some time. He served as bookkeeper for
the McKinley Bros. Mercantile Co., for several years. He has been in the
mutual insurance business for seven years and is now the Standard Mutual
Life Association. The local firm being composed of Jim Roddy and John
Cameron.
John Cameron, secretary of the Standard Mutual Life
Association was born at Flynn Ranch near Fairy in Hamilton County. After
finishing school he worked for number of years in the Hamilton National
Bank and the Perry National Bank. He also worked some time with a mutual
life insurance company in Victoria before organizing the association in
Hamilton.
He married Miss Wallace Hunt, daughter of J. W. Hunt, a
pioneer of Hamilton County.
During the World War he served in the 36th Div.
and spent 12 months in France.
The Standard Mutual Life Insurance Association was
organized four years ago, and is owned entirely by home people. Every
penny paid into this organization remains here. Thousands of dollars each
year is paid to beneficiaries--last year $11,000 being paid to policy
holders in a radius of twenty miles of Hamilton.
The association is under the supervision of the State
Insurance Department. You can protect your family at a minimum cost by
taking a policy with this company. During the four years of its existence,
the total cost per $1,000 policy has been an average of $8.00 per year.
Every person should carry insurance. If you are not in
good financial circumstances it is all the more the reason that you should
