Among the leading drug firms in Hamilton is that of two
enterprising young men, John Koen and Robert Foster of the Koen and Foster
Drug Store on the west side of the square.
Mr. Robert Foster, member of the firm, is a Texan, born
in Coryell County. He is a graduate of the North Texas Teacher’s College
of Denton and a Texas University man. After completing his education Mr.
Foster followed the profession of teaching and taught for 12 years; 4
years as principal of the Weatherford Schools and three years as principal
of the Hamilton schools, and five years as Superintendent of the Hamilton
Public School system. Mr. Foster is a son of Will J. Foster, a
Mississippian, who took an active interest in the welfare of his native
state. After reaching Texas he settled in Coryell County. He married Miss
Martha Ann Adams whose father was an extensive slave and land owner before
the Civil War.
After the death of his father, though a lad, began
earning is own career and after completing his education and several years
as an educator, decided to enter the drug business with two other young
men of equal enterprise, John D. and A. J. Koen. They formed the
partnership and established the drug firm now known as Koen and Foster.
A few years later A. J. Koen withdrew from the firm to
prepare himself for the practice of dentistry, which he is now
successfully following.
Mr. Foster married Miss Frances Louise King, born in
Dallas, and reared in Granbury. Her father, David M. King was born in
Scotland near Dundee, famed in song and story. He was a noted singer and a
member of a noted choir and sang before Victoria, Queen of England. Upon
reaching the United States, Mr. King was employed by the most noted New
York jewelry firm, Tiffany Bros., to manage an estate, which was his
occupation for a while. He then came to Texas with Dallas as his
destination. Mrs. Foster’s mother, Elizabeth Hall was born in
Tallahassee, Florida, but was married in Dallas. After leaving Dallas, Mr.
and Mrs. King spent the remainder of their lives in Granbury and Hamilton.
