James Arch Emmett is one of the younger business men who has developed two businesses in one, the only shop of its kind in this community; cabinet making and furniture dealing.

He was born in January, 1899, in Hamilton county.  His father, a first settler, was Thomas Addis Emmett. The elder Mr. Emmett was born in Dublin, Ireland, but came to America with his parents in his early boyhood, and they settled in Connecticut. His mother, Laura (Pickett) Emmett, was a native of Illinois. They were married in Waco but moved to Hamilton soon after where their six boys and four girls were born and reared. Mr. Emmett, the father, was in leather business in Waco with Tom John Padgett, who later bought him out. He established the second or third business in Hamilton, which was a Tinner’s and Plumber’s business.

James Arch Emmett was educated in the Hamilton public schools, Texas A. & M. College and T. C. U.  He completed the pre-medical course there. Due to certain obligations he returned home to enter the plumbing business with his father and Brother, Thomas Addis, Jr. His present business was developed through a hobby. Every spare moment was spent in his wood working shop. The time came when special orders flooded him and he decided to devote his entire time to his hobby. Some one has said, "Tis a wise man who makes his hobby pay." Mr. Emmett has had a business in Arizona, Denver, Colorado, and Corpus Christi, but home ties were too strong to keep him away for long. A few years ago he returned to establish his present business in the John Eidson building.

He was married May, 1933, in Waco to Miss Mary Etta Gardner. She is the daughter of J. W. Gardner and Leila (Watson) Gardner of Jonesboro. Mrs. Emmett takes an active interest in the shop and helps in the upholstering and refinishing department.

The Emmett Furniture Shop is a complete workshop, capable of handling any kind of furniture repair and refinishing. Made-to-order furniture is give as the speciality of this shop. Mr. Emmett has shipped special order furniture as far north as New York City. The Historical and Trade Expansion Edition of the News insists upon its readers visiting this shop and seeing a master craftsman at his work.
