McGIRK CEMETERY
Capt. Gaither J. Ball gave the land (without a deed) for the McGirk
Cemetery to the Public of Hamilton County, Texas, in the 1880's. Before
November, 1962, Adrian Jones deeded the cemetery to the public.
This is an incomplete list of those interred in the McGirk Cemetery.
Please send information about anyone who has been omitted so that the
person may be added to this list.
Directions from Goldthwaite:
From Goldthwaite take State Highway 84 toward Star for 15.2 miles. Turn
left on CR 1047 and go for 5.6 miles. The McGirk Cemetary is on your
right. It is only 2.6 miles to the intersection of 2005.

[Rev. John Thomas Dean, who was evidently in McGirk in 1893. His daughter, Lucy (one of 12 children) died and was supposedly
there in 1893. She was born in Coryell in 1890.
Family lore (from "One Man's Family, Texas Style" - a booklet published for the family in 1969) says that J. T. Dean studied at the Baptist Seminary in Louisville, KY and was ordained in 1889. He then moved to McGirk where he "taught school and was Pastor of the Baptist Church."
"It was in McGuirk (sic) that Tom and Nettie (Marie Antoinette Chambless Dean) met and became friends with another Christian known as "Cowboy Westley." Through this new friend, Tom Dean saw the truth of separation and left the Baptist Church."
"A dentist in the community was also among the Brethren and he and Tom became very close friends. In fact. Dr. E. A. Martin set up his dental office in Tom's home. The two men were a great source of encouragement to one another and it was while they were together that Tom felt God's call to publish a Gospel magazine. He sold his farm and
equipment and moved his family to Goldthwait (sic), Texas in 1895. The money obtained from the sale of his farm was used to purchase a printing press and all the auxiliary equipment needed. " The magazine was called "Faithful Words."
"The press was set up in their home and with the assistance of Dr. Martin, the magazine was
printed in 1895. (....)"]

T. Dean bought 70 acres on the Lampasas River on Jan. 1, 1892 from A.
Hudson. It's in Volume 2 page 598 of the Hamilton County Record at the
Hamilton Courthouse. I would like to know where that is and visit it,
but can't decipher the description:
"Being a part of the south half of survey No 1 of 21 Hamilton
County School Land. Beginning on the west boundary line and five
hundred and fifty two varas from the north west courner of said survey
S.M. for corner. Then S 19 E 552 varas to South West corner from which
a Live Oak brs(?) S 61/2 W 61 vrs. Thence N71E 808 vrs to South East
corner S. M. for corner. Thence N19W 155 vrs. SM for corner. Thence
N71W 131 vers to west bank of the creek. SM for corner. Thence north
with the meanderings of the creek far enough from the same for a fence
on the west bank to the South line of the North half said Survey No 1
of 21 Hamilton Country School Lane. S.M. for Corner. Thence N71 W to
the place of beginning.
