After many weary months of suffering Mrs. Rachel
Cordelia Collett fell asleep in Jesus at 11:35 o'clock last Friday
morning. She was making her home with her daughter Mrs. E. R. Misener,
where she had lived for some seven years and had been tenderly loved and
cared for by Mr. and Mrs. Misener and the grandchildren. Some twelve
months ago Mrs. Collett fell and sustained injuries in her hip which
caused her invalidism, and from which she remained a cripple until death
released her from her suffering.
Mrs. Collett was a native of North Carolina, having been
born in Collettville, April 21, 1845. Her parents were the late Mr. and
Mrs. J. H. Collett, for whom the town of Collettville was named, and well
known people in this county, having come to Pottsville to make their home
in 1874. She moved to Dallas with her father and mother four years
previous to their settling in Hamilton county, therefore she has witnessed
the progress of Texas through a period of fifty years, and of Hamilton
county for forty-six years. Until she came to Hamilton some seven years
ago to reside with her daughter, Mrs. Collett had lived with a brother in
Dallas. She had been a member of the Missionary Baptist church for many
years and led a devout Christian life. Modest and retiring devoted to her
family and their interests, hers was a home loving heart. She was idolized
by her daughter and grandchildren, and never wanted for tenderest care and
thoughtful, loving ministrations, and besides these she was loved by all
who knew her for her sweet and gracious spirit, and her cheerfulness under
all circumstances. She was patient in her suffering and bore all her
trials with wonderful fortitude. And now she is at rest in that celestial
home where there is no more sorrow, no more suffering for her to endure,
but joy eternal with the angels about the resplendent throne of God. She
is survived by Mrs. Misener, six grandchildren and five great
grandchildren. The granddaughters are Mrs. Nora Sellers of Del Rio, Texas;
Mrs. Bessie Massman of El Paso, Texas; Mrs. Edna Reese, Elizabeth, N.J.;
Miss Eleanor Misener, El Paso, Texas; and her grandson Richard Misener of
Dallas. The great grandchildren are Mary Ellen and Fay Elizabeth Hickman
of El Paso, Texas; Edwin Sellers, Del Rio, Texas; Al H. Brunson, Jr. and
Dorothy Eloise Brunson of Cisco. Other than these are two brothers, John
Collett, Clifton, Arizona; Charles Collett, Robert Lee, N.M.; and three
sisters, Mrs. Harriett Coffee, Lenore, N.C.; Mrs. S. E. Phillips, Clifton,
Arizona; Mrs. Jane Campbell, Monument, N.M.
Funeral services were held at the home of Mrs. Misener
on Saturday morning, September 25, at 10 o'clock, Rev. S. A. Rains reading
the blessed promises of the scriptures, paying tribute to the life of the
Mother who would walk the earth no more, and seeking the blessings of God
upon them that mourn.
Interment was made in the beautiful I.O.O.F. cemetery,
and many were the lovely floral offerings. Active pallbearers were Ira
Austin, A. L. Moch, Jack Moore, J. M. Williams, F. C. Williams, C. J.
Johnson.
The bereaved have the tenderest sympathy of all in their
great sorrow and lonelieness, but may they find comfort in the thought
that he has opened her eyes where -- "The night is gone: And with the
morn those angel faces smile Which I have loved and long since lost
awhile".
