HILL, WILEY WILLIAMSON &
FAMILY
Wiley Williamson Hill was
born January 4, 1825 in Alabama. June 19, 1851 he married Mary West in
Noxubee County, Mississippi. Mary, who was 19 years old, was the oldest
child of Benjamin and Jane Blasengame West. Wiley and Mary had nine
children; William B. "Willie", born 1853; Ella, born ca 1855;
T.J. "Jude", born ca 1858; John C., born 1860; Wiley W., Jr.,
born 1864; Ira Clifton "Cliff", born 1866; Sue "Emma",
born ca 1868; Annie Lee, born 1871; a twin who died at birth 1871.
Wiley W. Hill served
the CSA from 1861 until the close of the war. His wife and four children
were left in Alabama when he enlisted in the "Pickensville
Blues." The enlistees were organized into the 5th Alabama
Regiment of the Volunteer Infantry and sent to northern Virginia.
In 1884 Wiley W. Hill moved his
family from West Point, Mississippi to Hamilton. Their oldest daughter,
Ella, and her husband, Bill Perry, had settled on Bear Creek on the
outskirts of Hamilton. Mary's brother, William B. West, had also moved to
Hamilton County. Wiley established a family home on Bear Creek.
Wiley was a carpenter and
blacksmith. During much of his Confederate military service he was
assigned to the Armory near Richmond, Virginia because of his skill as a
gunsmith. In 1890, he was apparently in business in Hamilton as "W.W.
Hill and Son."
Wiley died December 27, 1892 a few
days before his 68th birthday. He is buried in Hamilton, Texas.
Mary West Hill survived her husband for 28 years and died August 22, 1921
in Ft. Worth. She is buried in Hamilton beside her husband and oldest son,
Willie.
Their daughter, Ella, remarried to
Jim Cooper of Bosque County, Texas. They had three children. Jude Hill and
his wife Cora were the parents of about eight. John Hill and his wife
Carrie in Hill County had eight children. Wiley, Jr, married Mrs. Addie
Smith, the oldest daughter of James M. Rice. Three children were born to
that marriage. The youngest, Nellie Jane Hill, moved to Arizona and her
family lives there still. Cliff Hill's daughter, Myrtle, married Jack
Burkett. Emma married William D. Williams and lived in Ft. Worth with
their seven children. Annie married Pierce Rice, the youngest son of James
Monroe Rice of Hamilton. Pierce and Annie moved to New Mexico where they
were ranchers. They were parents of three sons and two daughters. Pierce
and Annie and their family moved to Oregon in 1925. The surviving
grandchildren and great-grandchildren of Pierce and Annie make their homes
on the West Coast.
