Francis Niles Gordon was born the eighth child of Robert Erwin Gordon and Rosa Ann Gallagher August 23, 1883 in Hamilton Co., Texas. He married Julia Jane Cole, daughter of John Hiram Cole and Mary Simeon Ayers, September 15, 1904 in Hamilton Co., Texas. Julia was born July 11, 1886 in Hamilton Co., Texas.

They two had six children: Lois Gordon born September 22, 1905 in Hico, Hamilton Co., Texas; Clifford Raymond Gordon born January 05, 1908 in Hico, Hamilton Co., Texas; Agnes Ethelyene Gordon born February 24, 1914 in Hico, , Hamilton Co., Texas; Mary Frances Gordon born June 24, 1917 in Throckmorton Co., Texas; Harrell Edwin Gordon born November 24, 1920 in Throckmorton Co., Texas and Virginia Dare Gordon born July 09, 1923 in Throckmorton, Shackelford Co., Texas.

Lois Gordon went on to marry Brice Thomas June 03, 1923 in Throckmorton, Texas. Brice was born September 10, 1896 in Brown Co., Texas and died April 09, 1938 in Kerrville, Texas. At this time I don’t know where he’s buried. Lois and Brice had three children: Elva Mozelle Thomas born  in Seagraves, Texas and who married Paul Stephen Gilbert October 18, 1942 in Glendale, California. They in turn had three children; Judy Lois Gilbert born  in Columbus, Franklin Co., Ohio, Rebecca Anne Gilbert born  in Columbus, Franklin Co., Ohio, and Thomas Crawford Gilbert born Columbus, Franklin Co., Ohio. Lois and Brice’s second child was Gordon Douglas Thomas born October 15, 1926 in Throckmorton, Texas and who married Dolores Marie Francis November 26, 1953 in Quanah, Hardeman Co., Texas. Gordon died January 23, 1976 and is buried in Quanah, Hardeman Co., Texas. Gordon and Dolores had three children: Kyler Allen Thomas born  in Springfield, Ohio, Carol Ann Thomas born  in Springfield, Ohio and Laura Kay Thomas born  in Bangor, Penobscot Co., Maine. The third child is Cecil Bryan "Tom" Thomas born  in Throckmorton, Texas. Tom first married Betty Ann Downey July 06, 1956 in Springfield, Ohio. Betty was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. They had three children; Stephen G. Thomas born  in Indianapolis, Indiana. Stephen married Cheryl Beringer July 15, 1979 in Noblesville, Indiana; Martha E. Thomas born  in Indianapolis, Indiana and married Andrew Berman; Philip E. Thomas born  in Indianapolis, Indiana and married Cindy Baden. Tom married second Elaine Kay Jarrett April 15, 1989 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Elaine was born in Anderson, Indiana , daughter of Gordon Wayne Jarrett and Aloise Rhodes. Lois died January 19, 1986 in Springfield, Ohio and is buried in the Union Cemetery, in the Clarence A. Gilbert family plot, lot no.101, sec 59, Columbus, Franklin Co., Ohio. Elva's "Daughters of the American Revolution" National number is #761718.

Clifford Raymond Gordon went on to marry Ruth Redwine and they had two children: Jimmy Ray Gordon and Roddy Cooper Gordon. Clifford died May 23, 1996 in Jacksonville, Texas and is buried in Throckmorton, Texas. The complete information on this branch of the family is sketchy at best. Perhaps, before all memories and data are gone, the surviving family can help piece it together.

Agnes Ethelyene Gordon went on to marry Owen Sparkman 1938 in Waxahachie, Texas. Owen was born April 1902 in Hopkins Co., Texas and died October 08, 1982. He’s buried in Black Oak Cem., Hopkins Co., Texas. Ethelyene and Owen had one child, Lynn Harrell Sparkman that they adopted. Lynn was born  in Abilene, Taylor Co., Texas and married Janyce Starr December 22, 1973 in Anderson Co., Texas. Lynn and Janyce have three children; Julia Kathleen Sparkman born  in Anderson Co., Texas, Steven Sparkman born  in Anderson Co., Texas and Kimberly Janyce Sparkman born  in Anderson Co., Texas.

Ethelyene gave me the following:

 

"I was three years old when my parents moved to Throckmorton, Texas where my maternal grandparents lived. I graduated high school in 1931; attended North Texas State University and received a degree in elementary education from Pan American University, Edinburg. I was raised, and still am, a devout Christian.

My husband, Owen, and I both taught school, and farmed and ranched. In 1950, Owen and I adopted a son. He has been a joy to me and gave them both something to live for. Lynn Harrell lives in Elkhart (close enough to visit), and he and his wife have three children.

I taught school for 39 years in Throckmorton County, Hildalgo County and Henderson County. Over the years I have taught first through sixth grades, but third grade was my love....I taught third grade 20 of my 39 years. I retired in 1980.

I began teaching Sunday School as a teenager in the Beginner Department, and had also taught Juniors and Young People and served as leader in the Training Union Young Peoples group. It was not until I reached my "golden years" that I was privileged just to be a member of the adult class for the first time. But I also work with the nursing home ministry, served as Vice President of LLL in 1985-86, Secretary for 1987-88 and support Central Baptist Church by attending various conventions.

I’m a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma, a teacher's national organization and am a member of The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (D.A.R.). My National Number is #609477, being approved October 15, 1976 to the Daniel McMahin Chapter under the military records of my great-great-great grandfather, William Key.

I moved to Jacksonville, Texas in 1984 from Athens, Texas to be near my sisters and brother after my husband, Owen, passed away. I enjoy the early morning coffee with my sisters and I’m still very active in church."

Mary Frances Gordon married Paul James Brown October 15, 1939 in Throckmorton, Texas. Paul was born September 15, 1915 and died December 08, 1972 in Vernon, Texas. Frankie and Paul had two children; Randell Grant Brown born  in Wichita Falls, Texas. He married Judith Beard of Los Alomos, New Mexico August 14, 1982 in Wichita Falls, Texas; James Michael Brown born  in Vernon, Wilbarger Co., Texas, who married Linda Kay Nowlin April 14, 1973. They have two children, Daniel Paul Brown born  in Dallas, Texas and Kathryn Kristen Brown born  in Houston, Harris Co., Texas. Frankie is a member of The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Her national number is 608724.

Harrell Edwin Gordon married Dorothy Jeanette Andrews September 17, 1943 in Ennis, Texas. Dorothy was the daughter of Earl R. Andrews and Nettie Cunningham. She was born April 08, 1925 in Terrell, Kaufman County, Texas and she and Harrell both died at the hand of their oldest son May 08, 2001 in Terrell, Kaufman County, Texas. They’re buried in the Oakwood Cemetery, McLennan Co., Texas. They had two children; Andrew Niles Gordon born in Waco, McLennan Co., Texas and David Drew Gordon born  Waco, McLennan Co., Texas.

Obituary for Harrell Gordon - Dorothy Gordon

Harrell Edwin Gordon and Dorothy Andrews Gordon died Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at their farmhouse near Terrell. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 22 at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Chapel, 6101 Bosque Blvd. with the Rev. Julie Pennington-Russell officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be 7-9 p.m. Monday, May 21 at the funeral home.

Mr. Gordon was born Nov. 24, 1920, in Throckmorton. He graduated from Throckmorton High School in 1938. He left Throckmorton, attended Spartan Sheet Metal School in Maryland then returned to Dallas. He was employed at North American Aviation Plant in Dallas and joined the Army Air Corps in 1943.

Mrs. Gordon was born April 8, 1925, in Ennis. She graduated from Ennis High School in 1942. She attended Droughon’s Business College in Dallas and worked at Sears and Roebuck.

Harrell and Dorothy met when he opened a layaway account at Sears and asked her out on a date. They had a quick romance and were married Sept. 17, 1943. They moved to Fort Bragg, N.C. Harrell spent one year in Central Europe during WWII as a radar technician.

After WWII, he attended watch and jewelry school in Missouri on a G.I. Bill. They moved to Waco and started Gordon’s Jewelry on 25th St. Dorothy was employed as a secretary at Hill Printing and Stationary Co. while Harrell was getting the business started. She later joined him as salesperson and bookkeeper where their business continued for more than 40 years. They were longtime devoted members of Calvary Baptist Church where Harrell served as deacon and Dorothy as a Sunday School teacher. They devoted much of their time helping deliver food to elderly folks that were not able to get around. In 1990, they reduced the number of days open from six to three, eventually retiring in 1997. After retirement, Harrell spent most of his time at the Terrell farm but soon developed health complications. Dorothy spent a lot of her time within the last year caring for Harrell at the farm.

Harrell was preceded in death by his parents, Francis Niles and Julia J. Cole Gordon; brother, Clifford and Ruth Gordon; and sister, Lois Gohl. His surviving relatives are sisters, Ethelyene Sparkman, Mary Frances Brown and Virginia and Roland Offord all of Jacksonville, Texas.

Dorothy was preceded in death by parents, Earl R. Andrews and Nettie Cunningham Andrews. Surviving relative is her brother, Garnett and Lola Andrews.

Surviving both Harrell and Dorothy are two sons, Andrew Niles Gordon of Terrell, David Drew Gordon and his fiancee Tina Lamb Wells of Waco; and grandson, Bradley Scott Gordon.

Memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church.

Virginia Dare Gordon married Roland George Offord July 18, 1942. Roland was born February 13, 1919 in Chicago, Illinois. They have two children; Julie Beth Offord born in Wichita Falls, Texas. Julie first married Melvin William Dailey in 1977. They had a daughter, Sarajane Dailey born in Tomball, Texas. Sarajane has just recently married Jeffery Lee Gordon May 05, 2001 in the Bethany United Methodist Church, Austin, Travis Co., Texas. Julie Beth married second Jeffery Dale Owen before August 19, 1983. They have one son, Jeffery George Owen. The second child of Virginia and Roland is James Hamlin Offord born  in Jacksonville, Texas. He married Diane Karen Sessions Loftin and they have two children; James Torrey Offord born in Medina, Ohio and Courtney Elizabeth Offord born  also in Medina, Ohio. Virginia is a member of The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Her national number is 0608774.
