There were thirty-two in the organization and it grew and increased
rapidly.
THE FIRST MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH
The first Missionary Baptist Church organized in Texas was in
Washington on the Brazos, early in 1843. This was a few years before the
organization of the Southern Baptist Convention. True to their name
"Missionary Baptist" they soon appointed a committee to appeal
to the United States to send missionaries from the States into the new
Republic of Texas. This request was soon granted, and from time to time,
able ministers came to Texas.
These missionaries helped to spread the gospel and to establish
churches in Texas. In 1845 four young men who left their imprint on the
churches and other Christian organizations, arrived in Texas by way of
Galveston. They were Elders P. B. Chandler, H. L. Graves, Tellaferro, and
Creath. Soon Brother Chandler is at LaGrange, Brother Creath at
Huntsville, Tellaferro is at Austin, and H. L. Graves is the first
President of Baylor University at Independence.
