THE HOWARDS
Once he and Jim and John Livingston, Charlie
Day, and John Bond, were detailed out to kill Ves Howard [Sylvester
Howard]. (Considered a
horse or cow thief?) They waited till daylight outside the house. This was
customary in those days because if you went in they would have the
advantage, but if you waited , they would eventually come out for
something. But Howard wasn’t there, must have hid out- they did that
some in those days - and when Howard came back and found out about it, he
left the country for good. He didn’t know what became of him.
(I remember Charlie Day, son of Old Colonel Day, and once a neighbor;
also Mr. John Livingston, though never talked to either. In 1906 at a
Fourth of July picnic at Sweetwater, saw John Bond and family, he being
sheriff at the time. The year they were building the Mexico and Orient
Railroad through there. Was visiting Uncle Marion Roddy near Roscoe.)
