TEXAS TECH MEETING

Across the Fence

By Arvord Abernethy

Several Texas Tech Ex-Students met for their annual meeting last week at the Hamilton National Bank community room. After a time for registering and visiting, Carolyn Pool served all with a large dish of delicious ice cream that she had made herself.

Liano Jones, field representative for the Ex-Students Association, spoke of the need of such chapters as we have here to inform high school seniors of the advantages of Texas Tech.

Fred Bryant, assistant to the Dean of Agriculture spoke on what we could do to help Tech. He spoke of the fine, adequate buildings at Tech and also of the qualified staff of teachers, but there was need for larger scholarship endowment. Tech has not had the oil revenue to build up an endowment like the University of Texas and Texas A & M.

I sensed from the talks of both Mr. Bryant and Miss Jones that Tech was aiming at quality in both their teaching and in the graduates. They are anxious that local chapters work to get the most ambitious and deserving high school graduates to attend Tech.

Such students often need some financial help, so we learned that most of the money we contribute to this association each year can go to the scholarship fund for a Hamilton County boy or girl. You will be hearing more about this later.

Dr. Cavazos is the present president of Tech and is doing a wonderful job. He is the first Tech graduate to serve as president, so has a great love and vision for the school. This is one reason that quality is being emphasized.

Cliff Zachiesche, another field representative for the Ex-Students Association, presented an interesting slide and narration program on Tech. It showed many of the fine buildings there and a wide variety of activities that go on.

Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Brashear of Comanche had driven down for the meeting. They entered Tech in the early 30s, shortly after I was there, so they knew many people that I knew. They also had some things in common with some of the others, so all in all it was a very interesting meeting.
