RED RIVER, NEW MEXICO

Across the Fence

From The Hamilton Herald-News

By Arvord Abernethy

Mary and I are up here in Red River, New Mexico enjoying the scenery and just being lazy.

We came up to Glorieta, N.M. Wednesday where the Baptist Encampment is being held for Senior Adults. There were several from the Hamilton First Baptist Church attending the conference, so we got to eat and attend the night service with them. The encampment grounds are really beautiful now. The Hamilton people said that flowers were really pretty before the Tuesday night frost.

If you like good singing, you should hear about 900 gray haired people singing the old familiar song they “cut their teeth on”. The oldest person present that night was 91 years old. He had his bride of 68 years along with him and they made a cute couple.

We came on to Red River by the way of Taos where we turned back east to make what is called the Enchanted Circle Scenic Drive. The road is narrow and very, very crooked, but is very scenic, especially at this time of the year. The Aspens are nearing their peak of color, so with patches of bright yellow among the tall pines, they create an unforgettable picture. Where there are no big trees the ground is covered with small bushes that are now reed, rust, yellow and green, giving it the look of a fine carpet.

The towns of Red River gets its name from the Red River which flows right through it, rushing its cold, clear water on to the Rio Grande.

Today we were driving down the canyon toward Questa when we noticed what we thought was a shower falling on the mountains. As we drove on we soon began seeing flakes of snow falling. Very little fell then, but we have seen a little falling here in town, and even saw some on some roofs.

We have not seen any new snow on the mountains but there is still some old snow on Mt. Wheeler which is the highest point in New Mexico. It is near Red River.

My first trip to Red River was in 1934 when we came up here with another couple. The mountains even look higher now and the scenery is just as beautiful. If you are wondering where to go for a grand vacation, you should consider Red River. Mary and I drove up the Pecos River above Pecos, New Mexico and we really enjoyed that trip.

I’ve been watching a ball game, so am not responsible for all I’ve written. Ask me about our trip when we get back.
