HARRELL & WOODARD

Across the Fence

By Arvord Abernethy

Mrs. Gladys Harrell and Mrs. Kay Woodard have just returned from a visit to Brazil. Gladys’ sister, Hazel and her husband, Bob Cannon, live in Rio De Janerio, so, that is where they spent most of the two weeks.

The Cannons are with the oil industry there in Brazil and have lived in Rio for nine years. They know all the interesting things to see, so they had a full schedule of things to do and see while there.

Rio is a very beautiful, modern city with some six million people. One of the beauty spots of prominence is Sugar Load Mountain, an enormous solid rock peak that rises abruptly out of the earth. The ladies took the aerial car that takes people to the peak and they reported that the view of the city from there was indescribable.

On the way up to the peak they stopped at a park where the seasonal native dances were being held. They found this very interesting, as well as learning more about the natives.

Another beautiful sight in Rio is the statue of Christ the Redeemer. It is a peak that rises about 2400 feet above the city. The statue is of white concrete 100 feet high with an arm spread of 92 feet. It is well lighted with floodlights at night, so looks like a giant cross from nearly everywhere in the city.

One day they flew the 1500 miles up to Macaps which is on the Amazon River. This was a very interesting place as there is where the rubber barons had their homes and elaborate buildings back when Brazil had a monopoly on the rubber industry.

If you don’t have anything to do some rainy day, just call up one of these ladies and ask them to tell of their trip. It will brighten your day.
