GROOMER VS. SAXON

Across the Fence

By Arvord Abernethy

I had mentioned Mr. Groomer and the old Groomer place out on the Leon River in my column a few times, so when I ran across Lagree West down at the post office the other day he told me a story about Mr. Groomer.

It happened way back there when Capt. Saxon was editor of the Hamilton Herald. It seems that Mr. Groomer and the Captain had a little difference of opinion about something. One day when Mr. Groomer was in town he met Capt. Saxon and referring to his newspaper said, “Next week you just send me that old rag blank.” Capt. Saxon took him at his word and began every week wrapping up some blank sheets and sending them to Mr. Groomer.

This went on for some time and then Mr. Groomer and the Captain met in town one day. Mr. Groomer said something about half a newspaper, so Capt. Saxon started sending him just half of the paper and a blank sheet for the rest. This went on for awhile and then the men made up and things became normal again.
