GREEN GRASS
Across
the Fence

A group of
us were passing through San Saba one day when someone suggested that we go
by their park. It was real nice; they have their creek damned up making a
nice size lake and then water falls as it tumbles over the dam. They have
facilities of different kinds that make for a beautiful, serviceable park.
Lampasas
has a beautiful parkway along their creek. And Goldthwaite has recently
built a new community center, park, and other facilities through their own
efforts by donated labor and cash, and through sales, etc.
A few days
ago I got a glance behind Jim Ballow’s Texaco warehouse and he has mown
the grass that runs down toward the creek which is back of the warehouse.
Mrs. Jessie Wilson keeps the banks of the creek trimmed on her property
where the Dr. Ford and Dr. Merkley offices are. There could be others who
clear the creek that I don’t recall just now.
The
Methodist
Church
is on a branch of Pecan Creek and you should go by and see how pretty they
have things. Get in you car and drive completely around the block,
noticing how they are keeping the creek banks mown and how nice the
parking lot looks.
I
haven’t been to any of the meetings where the Pecan Creek Park project
was discussed, but certainly hope that much can be done, whether by
individuals or by public effort. With the completion of those upstream
flood prevention dams, there is very little danger of floods that would
destroy the improvements that would be placed there now. If it were
possible, I’m sure there are a lot of towns in
West Texas
that would gladly swap some of their flat, barren property for our Pecan
Creek so they could have some natural beauty.
The mowing
of lawns and vacant lots is a contagious thing up our way. The Bill
Lewises live back of us and their two sons, Shawn and Scott, mow the
vacant lot that is beside them and right behind us. That causes me to get
out our mower and mow the vacant lot that is beside us and right behind
the Lewises. Mitch Lykins has a lot just across the street, so he then
mows it. Since that lot is next to Wayne Cole,
Wayne
gets out his mower and mows his vacant lot. And on it goes.
Hamilton
is dressed in its very finest right now, and the same could be said of
Hamilton
County
. The good rains have really brought out the best in us. If you can afford
the gasoline, take a drive around late some afternoon.
