1897 TAX RECEIPT, ETC.

Jessie [Jessie Lee (Sims) (Wilson) Gautier] also had an 1897 tax receipt of G.M.D. Carters. The tax on 905 acres was broken down this way:

State Tax, $8.05,

School tax, $7.25,

County Tax , $10.06,

County special tax, $14.09 and

Poll tax $1.75.

R. C. Moore was the tax collector. One might say, “Them wuz the good ole days”, but who would like to dig that much out of the ground with a hoe and a cotton sack and bring it to town in a wagon over rough, rocky roads? The Carter place was located south of the Leon River and west of Highway 281 and is now owned by the J. K. Wilhelms.

Don’t know when I got such a lift as I did last Friday when I feasted on a good meal at the Senior Center and got to hear the La Tourneau College Singers put on a program. There were five of the young men; and whether it was solo, duet, quartet, every song was a treat.

La Tourneau is a private Christian college at Longview , Texas where the principles of integrity, industry and discipline are stressed. These boys reflected these qualities

I was down town the other day when the Lion’s Club had their broom and mop sale on the square. I bought a broom and some light bulbs and was on my way to the car when I met Mitch Lykins. He suggested that I put a card on the broom as a Mother’s Day present. I followed his suggestion and was just fixing to crawl under the house to check something when Mary drove in. I told her what I was doing and she went on into the house. In a minute she hollered back, “You can just stay under the house”. I got the message. Mitch, you have made some good suggestions at times, but this was not one of your better ones.
