DOBBS, Joseph B.
Born March 4, 1843, in Meriwether County, Georgia
Died January 15, 1910, in Cedartown, Polk County, Georgia
Joseph B. Dobbs enlisted into the Confederate States Army as a private on May 5, 1862, at the age of 19. He is listed in the Muster Roll of Company "B", 56th Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry, Army of Tennessee. Company "B" was comprised of men from Carroll County, Georgia.
The Fifty-Sixth Georgia Infantry was organized during the spring of 1862. It was mustered into Confederate service prior to mid-May, 1862. The unit was sometimes incorrectly known as the Fifty-Fifth Georgia Infantry. There was another Georgia unit with that designation, and there was no relationship between the two organizations.

A short time after the regiment was mustered into service it was ordered to Chattanooga, Tennessee. There it joined the Department of East Tennessee. The regiment served in that command until early in 1863. Transferred to Mississippi, the regiment next served in the Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana and in the Army of Vicksburg. The regiment surrendered when Vicksburg fell on July 4, 1863. Subsequently exchanged, the unit next joined the Army of Tennessee. It served in that Army for the remainder of its career.

Joseph was wounded and disabled at Atlanta, Georgia on July 22, 1864.
The Fifty-Sixth Georgia Infantry surrendered at Bennett's House, Durham Station, North Carolina on April 26, 1865. Nothing has been found in official sources to show how many members of the Fifty-Sixth Georgia Infantry were still with the unit when it finally surrendered. An unofficial report, however, indicated that fewer than one-hundred men were still with the unit at that late date.

An exhibition of expenses paid by the Board of Trustees of Bowden College, from the fund appropriated by the State of Georgia, for the Education of Indigent Maimed Soldiers for the year 1867 is in collection 055 AC 00-138, Private Manuscripts Section, Georgia Department of Archives and History. Joseph Dobbs' name is on that list. This is apparently how Joseph obtained his education to qualify for the position of school teacher. Joseph drew for the first quarter $34.60 for board, $10.00 for tuition, $7.73 for clothing, $1.15 for books, and 1.00 for incidentals. For the second quarter Joseph drew $54.00 for board, $10.00 for tuition, $19.50 for clothing, and $1.00 for incidentals. For the third quarter Joseph drew $31.70 for board, $10.00 for tuition, $14.00 for clothing, $11.75 for books, and $1.00 for incidentals.
