FIRST STOP! Georgia's Slave Population in Legal Records by David E. Paterson
Newly revised!

Excellent and very, very thorough intro to courthouse records by David Paterson. This especially applies to Upson County, and he gives many examples including names of slaves so you just might be lucky!!

Ex-Slave Marriages to 1876 David E. Paterson has collected the data from the Courthouse book that recorded the issuing of licenses to ex-slaves. Contains former slave owner when available.

Ex-Slave Marriages 1875-1877 David E. Paterson transcribed this data from a bundle of Form A- Marriage Licenses(used from 1875 to 1877). These contain the parent's name, age of bride and groom, etc. Scroll across the screen to read all 63 records. This is an exciting new addition!

Case Study - Determining Maternity David E. Paterson provides some guide lines for determining maternity through available records. He has done a case study on the Alpheus Beall's slaves showing how to apply the data found on various records.

EARLY COUNTY FREEDMAN'S BUREAU Michael Dennis' Letter to the Freemen's Bureau, November 30, 1865 with Introduction by David E. Paterson .

Although this deals with Early County information, it is helpful as a "how to find information in the Freedman's Bureau Files" document, and also provides insights into Plantation Life.
LDS has published Freedman records on CD-Rom. 1-800-537-5971 and asking for item 50120 $6.50. (12 million black Americans. The Freedman's Savings and Trust Company had offices in Atlanta, Augusta and Savannah, Ga. Burial Societies

Many local Southern blacks used to belong to burial societies-the agent came by their house each week to collect the premiums toward their burial expenses-they often paid a great deal more than the actual cost of the funeral because they paid for so many yrs. These societies had names, such as United Ring Society or United Brothers & Sisters Society.

Published Research Resource

The revised edition of "The Source: A Guidebook of American Genealogy" (Salt Lake City: Ancestry, 1997) includes a very useful chapter entitled "Tracking African American Family History." Includes types of records and what information you might find there and where to locate them. The Bibliography is also excellent.
