Georgia was established in 1732, the last of the original thirteen colonies. It was named after King George II. It was the fourth state to ratify the constitution on 2 Jan 1788. On 21 Jan 1861, Georgia seceded from the Union as one of the seven original Confederate States. It was the last state to be restored to the Union on 15 Jan 1870. Many of the counties were formed following various Cherokee and Creek land cessations.
Unlike most states with large western territory, Georgia never ceded it's land. Instead, in what is known as the Yazoo Land Fraud, Georgia sold the territory we now know as parts of the states of Mississippi and Alabama to the federal government in 1802.
Georgia is bordered by Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina.
