Dr. J.M. Elliott Will Face Trial
LaGrange Veterinary Surgeon, Who Killed George L. Rivers, Will Be Arraigned In
Troup County
LaGrange, Ga., Nov. 10 - The trial of Dr. J.M. Elliott, accused of the murder
of Mr. George L. Rivers, which is set for Wednesday of this week, in Troup
County Superior Court, will be of more than usual interest.
The shooting occurred on the afternoon of September 1st, on the front veranda
of the Rivers boarding house, where Mr. Rivers was sitting. From accounts of
witnesses,it states that Dr. Elliott drove around the rear of the house, tied
his horse and went to his wife's room.
According to statements of the negro nurse who was in the room with Mrs.
Elliott, Dr. Elliott began to quarrel with both his wife and nurse. Mrs.
Elliott started to leave the room when he threatened to kill her if she did so,
striking her on the head with his pistol. She ran from the room and on through
the hall to the front porch where Mr. Rivers was sitting, followed by Dr.
Elliott. The doctor then began firing on Mr. Rivers, three balls striking him,
one in the side, another in his arm and the third through his right lung.
Although mortally wounded, Mr. Rivers went to his room, procured his own pistol
and started to follow his assailant out on the street. Friends seeing his
condition, led him back to the house, when medical aid was summoned. He
lingered until the next day, about 25 hours from the time of the shooting.
It seems that there had been no trouble whatever between the two men previous
to the killing, Dr. Elliott, with his wife and baby, had been boarding a few
weeks with Mr. Rivers.
Mr. Rivers was one of the best-known citizens of LaGrange, and his death has
been greatly deplored. He is survived by his wife and nine year old daughter.
Dr. Elliott, who is a Veterinary Surgeon, came to LaGrange about three weeks
before from Macon.
Solicitor General J.R. Terrell will lead in the prosecution and will be
assisted by Colonel Hatton Lovejoy, of LaGrange.
Attorney McNeel of Macon has been employed in the defense. Colonel M.U. Mooty,
of LaGrange, will assist him. It is understood the defense will try the case
on the grounds of emotional insanity, Dr. Hinkle, of Macon, has been summoned
as expert testimony. A large number of witnesses have been summoned to testify
in the case.
