Johnson Family Documents

"The above is my grandfather's Teacher's license from Town's Co. although I have never heard that he taught.  I have more pictures and documents including the application of John Battles and Loas Johnson for the pension of their son Robert Gainway Johnson after he died in the Civil War."

"By far, the sample above is part of the most interesting thing I found at the National Archives a few years ago.  There was a little box on a shelf that contained an index of loyalist's claims to the US after the Civil War.  I include only a sample because there are 80 standing interrogatories answered by Jessie, his 2 sons,  and I may have one  where John B. Johnson also answered these interrogatories.  In their answers, Jesse recounts how the soldiers came and shot his dog and took some of his things and left a receipt.  I found it very humanizing."

"I found where Ira Grigg is buried in a cemetery in Towns Co. although most of this family (Jesse Grigg - a brother of Loas Grigg Johnson) seems to have settled in Rabun Co.  I have a lot of documentation on that family as Jesse filed for a loyalty claim after the civil war and in it recounts the northern soldiers staying at his place.  He talks about only one son who went to serve for the South and they never saw him again -  My mother's family tree from this area seems to get Union, Rabun, Towns and Clay County all tied up together - looking at the surnames - I am not alone. George Walton Johnson's biography is also listed in the
Memoirs of GA."
"The above is an article in a Georgia paper after my grandfather returned from WW I - some of it is boring - who would have thought there was so much down time in France but there is also a lot of action - chasing the Germans out of a house and stopping to eat their food because they were so hungry before they again took up pursuit - he was a forward observer and did see some action in St. Michael and in the Argonne.  He was gassed and had several other adventures all of which he kept in a diary with him during the war - in fact I even think his  train ride to go up north to leave for Europe is interesting - first time he had been out of the state is my guess."
