TAYLOR COUNTY TIDBITS
Visit by Virginia Crilley ([email protected]) May, 1999

Everyone in the Taylor County courthouse was extremely helpful. Dianne Renfro in the Probate Office made me feel right at home. I concentrated there on "abstracting" some of the early Inferior Court Minutes as they give some helpful clues about individuals that might not be found in wills/deeds, etc. Dianne is also trying to create an index to this early volume. Maybe we can all combine our efforts!

Denise in the Deeds Office (Superior Court) helped get me oriented to the Deeds Indexes (Reverse and Direct). There are just TWO HUGE INDEX books....this is in contrast to some Counties where the Indexes are within each Volume for the early years. She also showed me the volumes of Superior Court Minutes. The early Superior Court Minutes are not indexed.

She also put me in touch with Wiba Dean Tante. I was trying to find out more info on the Corbitt Church and Cemetery. Wiba Dean provided us with the info that this church existed until around 1917 and that the Deed might be listed under Brewer or Streetman. With Denise's help I did locate it ....Aug 8, 1905 when the land was deeded by J.E. Brewer and L.M. Streetman.

The lesson I learned was to chat with these Clerks and mention the names that you are going to be researching. It turned out that Wiba Dean had actually been in the office in the morning while I was there, and I could have met her in person, had Denise known of my interest.

I tend to be a little shy and hesitate to interrupt their work, but I found that they really were happy to be helpful if you just share alittle about your interests.
