Corbitt Methodist Church

Corbitt (Corbett) Methodist Church was named for its first pastor, William W. Corbitt who organized the church around 1855.

The church is no longer standing, but was located south of Butler east of Hwy 137 on Land Lot 234. The Cemetery is there today and is known as Corbitt Cemetery or Col. Brewer Cemetery.

We have no early records, but are trying to piece together some of the history.

The Rev. Corbitt was probably born in 1816 in Virginia (per Census Records and cemetery record). That portion of the county would have been in Marion County prior to 1852 when Taylor County was born. He died in 1859 and his widow, Julia and four children are listed on the Taylor County 1860 census. (George, 17; Sarah E. 14; Lucy A. 12; William W. 7; and a male infant only one month old.)
