CRAIG LETTER 1898
SUBMITTED BY JEAN B. SHARP
The Craig letter was found folded in a book many years ago by my grandmother. It was
my understanding
that she had worked for a family named Craig in Toccoa, Ga.ca late found in one of the books. Apparently, the family had either died or moved, as she was unable to return the letter. She gave the letter to me in the 1960's and in 1973, I took it to the Georgia Dept. of Archives & History where they made a copy for file. Now, I have the opportunity to share this letter with others and hopefully will be contacted by descendents of the Craig family. The letter is handwritten on company stationary. Transcribed verbatim:
A.G. Craig Allen M. Craig
A.G. CRAIG & BRO. WHOLESALE AND RETAIL DEALERS IN COAL, WOOD, LIME AND CEMENT, Plaster, Plastering Hair, etc. COAL-BITUMINOUS, ANTHRACITE, STER?, FOUNDRY AND BLACKSMITH. WOOD-FOR COOKING STOVES, RANGES, HEATERS AND FIRE PLACE CUT TO ORDER
Charlotte, N.C. Oct. 27 1898
Dear Jennie & John, We received a letter from Lanna announcing the sad death of your little one. We all feel for both of you very much. Truly you all have had more than your share of sorrow of this nature. It is difficult, (though we must admit) to believe that these afflicitions are for the best, but an all wise Providence directs such things & we must try to be resigned. I trust both of you will be reconciled & feel that the little one so dear to you is better off. With much love, I am Yours Brother Arthur
