Having been led, as we believe, by the Spirit of God to receive the Lord Jesus Christ as our Saviour, and on profession of our faith, having been baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, we do now in the presence of God, angels, and this assembly, most solemnly and joyfully enter into covenant with one another, as one body in Christ. We engage, therefore, by the aid of the Holy Spirit, to walk together in Christian love; to strive for the advancement of this Church in knowledge, holiness, and comfort; to promote its prosperity and spirituality; to sustain its worship, ordinances, discipline and doctrines; to contribute cheerfully and regularly to the support of the ministry, the expenses of the Church, and the relief of the poor, and the spread of the Gospel through all nations. We also engage to maintain family and secret devotions; to religiously educate our children; to seek the salvation of our kindred and acquaintances; to walk circumspectly in the world; to be just in our dealings, faithful in our engagements, and exemplary in our deportment; to avoid all tattling, backbiting, and excessive anger; to abstain from the sale and use of intoxicating drinks as a beverage, and to be zealous in our efforts to advance the kingdom of our Saviour. We further engage to watch over one another in brotherly love; to remember each other in prayer; to aid each other in sickness and distress; to cultivate Christian sympathy in feeling and courtesy of speech; to be slow to take offense, but always ready for reconciliation, and mindful of the rules of our Saviour to secure it without delay. We moreover engage that when we remove from this place, we will, as soon as possible, unite with some other church, where we can carry out the spirit of this covenant and the principles of God's word. This is the Church Covenant taken from Pendleton's "Church Manual." |
DECLARATION OF FAITH. I. Of the Scriptures. We believe that the Holy Bible was written by men divinely inspired, and is a perfect treasure of heavenly instruction; that it has God for its author, salvation for its end, and truth without any mixture of error, for its matter; that it reveals the principles by which God will judge us; and therefore is, and shall remain to the end of the world, the true center of Christian union, and the supreme standard by which all human conduct, creeds, and opinions should be tried. II. Of the True God. We believe that there is one, and only one, living and true God, an infinite, intelligent Spirit, whose name is Jehovah, the Maker and Supreme Ruler of heaven and earth; inexpressibly glorious in holiness, and worthy of all possible honor, confidence and love; that in the unity of the Godhead there are three persons:the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost; equal in every divine perfection, and executing distinct but harmonious offices in the great work of redemption. III. Of the Fall of Man. We believe that man was created in holiness, under the law of his Maker; but by voluntary transgression fell from that holy and happy state; in consequence of which all mankind are now sinners, not by constraint, but choice; being by nature utterly void of that holiness required by the law of God, positively inclined to evil; and therefore under just condemnation to eternal ruin, without defense or excuse. IV. Of the Way of Salvation. We believe that the salvation of sinners is wholly of grace; through the mediatorial office of the Son of God, who by the appointment of the Father, freely took upon him our nature, yet without sin; honored the divine law by his personal obedience, and by his death made a full atonement for our sins; that having risen from the dead he is now enthroned in heaven; and uniting in his wonderful person the tenderest sympathies with divine perfections, he is every way qualified to be a suitable, a compassionate, and an all-sufficient Saviour. V. Of Justification. We believe that the great gospel blessing which Christ secures to such as believe in him is Justification; that Justification includes the pardon of sin, and the promise of eternal life on principles of righteousness; that it is bestowed, not in consideration of any works of righteousness which we have done, but solely through faith in the Redeemer's blood; by virtue of which faith his perfect righteousness is freely imputed to us of God; that it brings us into a state of most blessed peace and favor with God, and secures every other blessing needful for time and eternity. VI. Of the Freeness of Salvation. We believe that the blessings of salvation are made free to all by the gospel; that it is the immediate duty of all to accept them by a cordial, penitent, and obedient faith; and that nothing prevents the salvation of the greatest sinner on earth but his own inherent depravity and voluntary rejection of the gospel; which rejection involves him in an aggravated condemnation. VII. Of Grace in Regeneration. We believe that, in order to be saved, sinners must be regenerated or born again; that regeneration consists in giving a holy disposition to the mind; that it is effected, in a manner above our comprehension, by the power of the Holy Spirit in connection with divine truth, so as to secure our voluntary obedience to the gospel; and that its proper evidence appears in the holy fruits of repentance and faith and newness of life. VIII. Of Repentance and Faith. We believe that Repentance and Faith are sacred duties, and also inseparable graces, wrought in our souls by the regenerating Spirit of God; whereby, being deeply convinced of our guilt, danger, and helplessness, and of the way of salvation by Christ, we turn to God with unfeigned contrition, confession, and supplication for mercy; at the same time heartily receiving the Lord Jesus Christ as our Prophet, Priest, and King, and relying on him alone as the only and all-sufficient Saviour. IX. Of God's Purpose of Grace. We believe that Election is the external purpose of God, according to which he graciously regenerates, sanctifies, and saves sinners; that being perfectly consistent with the free agency of man, it comprehends all the means in connection with the end; that it is a most glorious display of God's sovereign goodness, being infinitely free, wise, holy, and unchangeable; that it utterly excludes boasting, and promotes humility, love, prayer, praise, trust in God, and active initiation of his free mercy; that it encourages the use of means in the highest degree; that it may be ascertained by its effects in all who truly believe the gospel; that it is the foundation of Christian assurance; and that to ascertain it with regard to ourselves demands and deserves the utmost diligence. X. Of Sanctification. We believe that Sanctification is the process by which, according to the will of God, we are made partakers of his holiness; that it is a progressive work; that it is begun in regeneration; and that it is carried on in the hearts of believers by the presence and power of the Holy Spirit, the Sealer and Comforter, in the continual use of the appointed means, especially the word of God, self-examination, self-denial, watchfulness, and prayer. XI. Of the Perseverance of Saints. We believe that such only are real believers as endure unto the end; that their persevering attachment to Christ is the grand mark which distinguishes them from superficial professors; that a special Providence watches over their welfare; and that they are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation. XII. Of the Harmony of the Law and the Gospel. We believe that the Law of God is the eternal and unchangeable rule of his moral government; that it is holy, just and good; and that the inability which the Scriptures ascribe to fallen men to fulfill its precepts arises entirely from their love of sin; to deliver them from which, and to restore them through a Mediator to unfeigned obedience to the holy Law, is one great end of the gospel, and of the means of grace connected with the establishment of the visible church. XIII. Of a Gospel Church. We believe that a visible church of Christ is a congregation of baptized believers, associated by covenant in the faith and fellowship of the gospel; observing the ordinances of Christ; governed by his laws; and exercising the gifts, rights, and privileges invested in them by his word; that its only scriptural offices are Bishops, or Pastors, and Deacons, whose qualifications, claims, and duties are defined in the epistles to Timothy and Titus. XIV.Of Baptism and the Lord's Supper. We believe that Christian Baptism is the immersion in water of a believer, into the name of the Father, and Son, and Holy Ghost; to show forth, in a solemn and beautiful emblem, our faith in the crucified, buried, and risen Saviour, with its effect in our death to sin and resurrection to a new life; that it is prerequisite to the privileges of a church relation; and to the Lord's Supper; in which the members of the church, by the sacred use of bread and wine are to commemorate together the dying love of Christ; preceded always by solemn self-examination. XV. Of the Christian Sabbath. We believe that the first day of the week is the Lord's Day, or Christian Sabbath; and is to be kept sacred to religious purposes, by abstaining from all secular labor and sinful recreations; by the devout observance of all the means of grace, both private and public; and by preparation for that rest that remaineth for the people of God. XVI. Of Civil Government. We believe that civil government is of divine appointment, for the interests and good order of human society; and that magistrates are to be prayed for, conscientiously honored, and obeyed; except only in things opposed to the will of our Lord Jesus Christ, who is the only Lord of the conscience, and the Prince of kings of the earth. XVII.Of the Righteous and the Wicked. We believe that there is a radical and essential difference between the righteous and the wicked; that such only as through faith are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and sanctified by the Spirit of our God, are truly righteous in his esteem; while all such as continue in impenitence and unbelief are in his sight wicked, and under the curse; and this distinction holds among men both in and after death. XVIII.Of the World to Come. We believe that the end of the world is approaching; that at the last day Christ will descend from heaven, and raise the dead from the grave to final retribution; that a solemn separation will then take place; that the wicked will be adjudged to endless punishment, and the righteous to endless joy; and that this judgment will fix forever the final state of men in heaven or hell, on principles of righteousness. |

(The following items are filmed against the pages of the
minutes.) Letter on letterhead of The Executive Board, Georgia Baptist Convention,Atlanta, Georgia, dated February 13, 1935 Dear Brother Treasurer: You are cordially invited to attend the afternoon and evening sessions of one of the approaching one-day Regional Conferences on Evangelism and Stewardship, and you are earnestly requested to secure the attendance of other laymen from your church. I hope you will study and keep for future reference the enclosed schedule of these meetings. Note especially the list of strong speakers and leaders. These meetings, which will deal with two of the vital things of Christian experience and life, will be of interest and profit to laymen everywhere and it is hoped that you and other men of your church will attend. Others beside pastors and laymen are also cordially invited to share the blessings and benefits of these conferences. The meetings are well distributed throughout the state and in fairly easy reach of every section, which should make it possible for every church to be represented. You are earnestly requested to read the second enclosure which this letter contains. I refer to the blue sheet carrying statement of receipts for January and an important announcement regarding a change of plans with reference to the publication of the monthly honor roll of contributing churches. The full cooperation of every church and treasurer is vitally important in the task of maintaining regular and generous support of the Cooperative Program, which is the heart of all our work. I hope to meet you at one of the conferences. Cordially yours, /s/ JAMES W. MERRITT, Executive Secretary-Treasurer. NEW PLAN FOR HONOR ROLL OF CHURCHES
CONTRIBUTING MONTHLY For several years it has been the custom to publish monthly in the Christian Index an Honor Roll of churches making gifts during the preceding month to the Cooperative Program and its causes. This year a new plan will be followed. The publication of the monthly honor roll will be omitted but the detailed publication of the receipts by churches and associations each quarter will be continued, and the names of the churches contributing monthly will be starred to indicate this fact. In other words, when a quarter's receipts are published full recognition will be given in the above described manner to the churches which have forwarded gifts to the State Office within each of the three months of the preceding quarter. This slight change in procedure does not in any way alter or decrease the value of regular, systematic monthly contributions by the churches to the Cooperative Program. Indeed it is hoped and believed that the number of churches adopting the valuable plan of forwarding their gifts regularly each month will increase. The value of this plan to our missionary, benevolent and educational causes cannot be overestimated. |
||||||
COMPARATIVE RECORD OF RECEIPTS FOR
JANUARY 1934 AND 1935 Gain in Undesignated Cooperative Program Gifts Marks Record of First Month in New Year. The record of receipts for January, 1935, while showing a decrease in total as a result of a decrease in contributions to miscellaneous items, is nevertheless encouraging in that undesignated Cooperative Program gifts registered a gain as compared with the record for January, 1934. Designated gifts also registered a small gain in January of this year as compared with the corresponding month of 1934. The slow but steady increase in undesignated gifts gives convincing evidence of the fact that our people and our churches are more and more realizing the importance of the Cooperative Program and its central place in the work of our denomination. We need to keep before us the fact that our State Convention, in adopting a budget for 1935, comprehended an increase of approximately $35,000.00 in undesignated Cooperative Program gifts. This will call for a steady, month by month, increase in Program gifts if we are to provide the assured support to the missionary, benevolent and educational causes included in the program. The task immediately ahead is to lift the level of Program gifts in February and to an even greater degree than in January. With the cooperation of all this can easily be accomplished and the success of 1935's work indicated early in the year. |

A Brief History of Douglas Branch Church Written by Mrs. H. S. McCall In June 1850 a group of our forefathers met together under some hickory trees on theOld Louisville Road, where it crosses Douglas Branch near Barber's Bluff on theOgeechee River, for the purpose of worshiping God. There the Rev W S Moore, with Bible in hand, preached to these earnest pioneer Baptists. From that time on, he preached there on the first Sunday in each month, receiving and baptizing believers until a sufficient number had been baptized to constitute a church. OnNov. 2nd, 1851, Rev. W. S. Moore associated with himself the following named ministers, Revs. Samuel Simmons, Robert Donalson and G L Jackson, these composing the presbytery that constituted Douglas Branch Baptist church. Following are the charter members: David Burke, William Cail, Moses Thompson, John Lee, John D. Mock, Simeon Burke, Annie Burke, Mary Lee, Mary Jeffers, Elvira Thompson, Margaret Thompson, Sara Dixon, Honor Cail, Mary and Susan Mincey. Also Milly, a colored woman belonging to David Burke. From that day till this, the regular church services have been held on the first Sunday of each month. They were also held on the Saturday before, until 1934, when the Saturday services were discontinued and Sunday night services begun. In 1875 a letter was read in conference from Big Buckhead asking the church to change its day of meeting. It refused. James P. Thompson and James Wilson were the first deacons. David Burke the first clerk and Simeon Burke the first treasurer. David Burke filled the office until his death. His son, Abram Burke was later chosen clerk and served until his death. Simeon Burke was treasurer as long as he lived, and was succeeded b his son M. A. Burke, who served until his death. His daughter, Miss Eva, has been treasurer of the W. M.S. since its organization. The minutes do not record the time the first church house was built. In 1851 the church ordained as a minister of the gospel, Rev David Little, and in 1852, Rev Wm W Lee and he was then called by the church to serve jointly with W S Moore as pastor. The same year the church joined the Middle Association. Some of the old family names of members in those early years are Lee,Wilson, Thompson, Burke, Cail, Mock,Dixon, Barber, Daughtry, Jeffers, Brinson,Newton, Evans. Parkers and Zeiglers came later. The majority of our most faithful members now are descendants of these. John R. Evans moved to this section and joined the church, along with some members of his family in 1859. His grandson, W. S. Evans, is treasurer of the church and his great grandson, John R. Evans IV is president of the Sunbeam band. In 1860, the beginning year of the War Between the States, a revival meeting was held, continuing twelve days, and resulting in the addition of 60 members, 47 white and 13 colored. Nearly all by baptism. Soon after, the Sunday school was re-organized, and the next year G. L. Jackson was asked to preach on the third Sunday, in addition to the regular 1st Sunday services. Also a prayer meeting was begun, which met every Thursday afternoon at4 o'clock. In 1862 the church cooperated with the Sylvania Baptist church in raising funds with which to send books and tracts to our soldiers on the sea-coast. Following is an example of the carefulness of the church about the reputation of its members. In 1865, a committee composed of William Cail, Wm. Newton and Thomas Barber, was requested by the church to inquire into any bad report that might e made against any of its members. In 1866 the colored members began to have their conferences separate from, and immediately following the conference of the white brethren. It was presided over by the pastor of the church, with the deacons present. This custom was discontinued two years later. Quite frequently, along in those years, members were brought up in conference for unchristian conduct. Almost every time they would make acknowledgements to the church, ask forgiveness, and it was granted. The first day of January, 1876, was observed as a day of fasting and prayer, as recommended by the Association. In Nov. 1878, during the pastorate of Rev. W. C. McCall, a building committee composed of Simeon Burke, John R. Evans, Abram Burke and Wm. Newton was appointed to look after the erection of a new building. That is the one that was recently vacated by the church, and is several miles distant from the original church building. The minutes do not tell the date it was finished. Soon after moving into the new house, the church bought its first organ. That house was ceiled in 1885. We do not have the church minutes from 1887 till 1914, but obtained some information of those years from the file of associational minutes. In 1908 the W.M.S. was organized. It now has the same president and treasurer as it did then. These have served continuously. Four of the charter members are members now. These are Mrs. F. W. Burke, Miss Eva Burke, Mrs. Reuben Zeigler and Mrs. H. S. McCall. The same year the Sunbeam Band was organized at Harwell School House, and was later brought to the church. In 1916 the B.Y.P.U. was organized at Harwell School House because more young people were in that neighborhood. It succeeded splendidly there for several years, and was re-organized at Douglas Branch in 1926. In 1917 the Cemetery was built. This was during the pastorate of Rev. A. T. Cline. In 1921 Mrs. Abram Burke presented to the church an individual communion set as a memorial to her husband. In Sept., 1932 Rev. Lloyd Garland was called to the pastorate of the church, and we have been fortunate in keeping him up until the present time. In 1934 the members had a good amount of lumber sawed, from their own trees, to send to the Orphans Home, to help in the erection of a baby cottage. Ever since the Orphans Home Car of provisions has been going from the Middle Association, each winter, Douglas Branch has given a substantial supply. In 1936 a building committee was appointed to go forward with the remodeling of the present church-house, which was at that time a school building, not in use, and the property of the church. Names of the committee are C. W. Parker, W. S. Evans, Mrs. Reuben Zeigler, Mrs. F. W. Burke, Mrs. G. N. Thomas and Mrs. H. S. McCall. The whole church co-operated harmoniously, and wholeheartedly in this work, encouraged stimulated and assisted by the pastor, Rev. Lloyd Garland. It is due to his earnest determination that we should have an adequate church home, and that we are ready to dedicate this building today. The present trustees, of the church are J. H. Evans, W. S. Evans, and Mason Burke. The church, since its organization in 1851, has had many pastors. The changes were not frequent until after the resignation of Rev. A. T. Cline in 1920. Since then, and until 1932, Mercer students served the church as pastors continuously and satisfactorily. It was with regret that we accepted the resignation of each one. Some of these Mercer students are now serving large churches in this and other states. The pastors of this church, in their order of service, are as follows: W. S. Moore, W. W. Lee, Samuel Simmons, G. L. Jackson, H. G. Edenfield, J. M. Cross, W. C. McCall, H. G. Edenfield (2nd time), H. J. Arnett, H. G. Edenfield (3rd time), H. J. Arnett (2nd time), D. S. Edenfield, H. S. McCall, J. M. Cross (2nd time), A. T. Cline, T. A. Caraker, Ralph Moore, Gower Latimer, C. S. Prickett, J. A. Estes, Gilbertt Griffin, Mack M. Goss and Lloyd Garland. It would be impossible to record the faithful, service of hosts of past and present members of this church, who loved it then and love it now, next to their own homes. Many of us remember with grateful hearts the beautiful voice of Mr. Abram Burke, and his gladness to use it in singing praises to our Savior. We acknowledge with gratitude the untiring, loving service of Mr. F. W. Burke, who, in speaking of the church, would often say, "This is home". It was he who set out the oaks around former and present church houses. His brother Mr. Adolphus Burke was another faithful one. We are remembering the unfailing punctuality and generosity of Mr. Reuben Zeigler, who still blesses us with his presence. There are many others, that all of you are thinking of, whose deeds in behalf of the church will be on the book of the Recording Angel in Heaven. For all of this "roll call of the faithful" we thank God and take courage. April 19, 1938. |

(Following is a handwritten history; there are several (nearly
identical) copies in different handwriting.) Screven County Georgia Sep 5th 1915 On the first Sunday in June 1850 Our Forefathers met together on the Old Louisville Road, where it crosses Douglas Branch near Barber's Bluff under the shade of some Hickory trees with Rev W S Moore (the Grandfather of Mrs. Mattie Burns and Rufus Hunter), with Bible in hand he preached then and from time to time on the first Sunday in each month, receiving and baptizing believers until a sufficient number had been acquired to constitute The Baptist church. On the 2nd day of November 1851 Rev. W. S. (published article) DEATH OF MR. F. W. Burke Mr. Francis Wright Burke, one of Screven most popular and outstanding citizens, died at his home near Rocky Ford last night from an attack of pneumonia. He was eighty-three years old all of which was spent in the community in which he died. He was honored by all who knew him for being an honest, industrious and up-right man. Mr. Burke is survived by his widow Mrs. Susan Parker Burke, one son, Mr. Thomas J. Burke, one daughter, Mrs. L. W. Parker, one sister, Mrs. Ella Opie, one brother, Mr. A. M. Burke, and several grandchildren. He will buried at Douglas Branch church tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 o'clock and if the weather is good it will be one of the largest funerals ever held in this county as he has a host of relatives and friends who will want to pay him the last tribute of respect. He was a successful farmer and business man who was fair in all his transactions and his property was accumulated by the "sweat of his face" and on the farm on which he lived and died. He was a faithful and consistent member of Douglas Branch church and was always constant in attendance upon its services. His life was long and useful, and he will go in the history of his country as a patriarch and a patriot. "Haste thee on from grace to glory, Armed by faith and winged by prayer, Heav'n's eternal days before, God's own hand shall guide there. Death has closed thy earthly mission, Swift has passed thy pilgrim days, Hope has changed to glad fruition, Faith to sight, and prayer to praise." |

(published article) Evans. On the evening of to the higher life of the glorified. She was the daughter of
John and Sarah LUCAS, born Our lives In acts exemplary not only win Ourselves good names, but doth to others give Matter for virtuous deeds, by which we live." On The last years of her life were spent with her daughter, Mrs. H. S. MCCALL, and her husband who willingly and gladly gave her every joy, pleasure, and comfort possible. The funeral service was held in Douglas Branch church by her pastor, Rev. A. T. Cline, assisted by Rev. R. W. Selman, after which her body was tenderly laid to rest in Douglas Branch cemetery beneath a mound of beautiful floral offerings. As members of Douglas Branch church we now tenderly express our grief for the loss of sister Evans and love and appreciation for her Christian example. It seems almost unworthy to speak of her going with sadness. Tears are natural and right when we are called to say farewell to our loved ones, and in this instance we cannot well restrain them; yet there comes a feeling of joy and gladness, for our sister was full of years with a record of faithful service. She has fought a good fight, she has finished her course, she has kept the faith, and we rejoice that there is laid up for her a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give her at that day. We extend to the bereaved children, grandchildren and other relatives our sympathy, and commend them to the God of all comfort, who healeth the broken in heart, and giveth his beloved both peace and rest. We desire that a copy of this tribute be recorded on our church minutes, and that copies be sent to the Sylvania Telephone and the Christian Index for publication. REV. A. T. CLINE MRS. A. T. And may there be no moaning of the baar When I put out to sea, Too full for sound and foam, When that which drew from out the boundless deep Turns again home. And after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell When I embark, For though from out our bourne of time and place The flood may bear me far, I hope to see my Pilot face to face When I have crossed the bar. |

(published article) MR. F. W. Burke The steps of a good man are ordered of the Lord, and precious in his sight is the death of his saints. On Brother Burke was quiet and unassuming, but his sterling Christlike qualities and his consistent Christian living was an inspiration to those with whom he came in contact. He lived his religion and was always anxious to do his part when opportunity offered in labors of love or for financing the kingdom's work. He obeyed implicitly those words: "Be thou faithful unto death." Therefore now, Jesus has given him the promised crown of life with the "Well done thou good and faithful servant." Be it resolved by this church: First: That we extend to his bereaved family our heartfelt sympathy and condolence. Second: That by his death our church has lost a faithful, loyal and zealous member and a devoted deacon; and we reverence and honor his memory. Third: That we shall always miss him and that we emulate his example in his love and interest in his church and his fellowman, in his daily walk and in his beautiful Christian life. Fourth: That a copy of these resolutions be sent to his family, one copy be sent to The Christian Index and one copy be sent to the county paper for publication and these resolutions be inscribed on a page in our Church Record. (published article) Mills Augustus Burke Mr. Gus Burke, as he was familiarly and lovingly called,
went away to his Heavenly home on The beautiful home he built is noted for its hospitality. He and the other members of his household have always welcomed and entertained their many guests in the most cordial way. He spared no pains nor color in providing abundantly for his home. He was always ready to respond to the calls of the needy, whether they were from those living far or near, and he never failed to carry his full share of the burdens of his church and community. He was born almost 82 years ago in At the time of his death he had been treasurer of Douglas Branch church for 60 years, and deacon for nearly that long. In both these offices he was efficient and faithful. There were very few meetings of his church that he did not attend. In appreciation of his life and service, therefore be it Resolved by Douglas Branch church in conference assembled that we deplore the loss of this beloved brother. That we extend to his bereaved family our deepest sympathy. That we send a copy of this notice to his family, a copy to the Sylvania Telephone, a copy to the Christian Index, and place a copy on the pages of our minutes. Committee. |
