James C. Bragg

The Bragg family is report to have live in Screven Co. Georgia around 1786,

John Bragg was born around 1786 in Georgia. He was married in 1816 with Mary Sasser, daughter of Thomas and Clarissy (Clarissa) Sasser from Dobbs County, North Carolina. She was born around 1796. John died in 1865 in
Screven County, Georgia; Mary died some years later, around 1872. They had sixteen (16) children:

1.Elizabeth Bragg. She was born around 1812 in Georgia. She was married on February 2, 1833, in Screven County, Georgia, with Joseph Dickey, Jr. Elizabeth died around 1838 in Georgia.

2.Clarissa (Clary) Bragg. Clary was born around 1813 in Georgia. She was married on September 3, 1837, in Screven County with William Joyner, who was born around 1815 in Georgia. She died around 1848 in Georgia; William remarried in the following year with Clary's sister, Mary. Clary and William had six (6) children.

3.Thomas Bragg. He was born around 1815 in Screven County, Georgia. He was married in 1840 in Screven County with Susan Ann Burke, daughter of William Burke. She was born in January 1811 in Georgia. I have seen two different marriage dates for them, one January 1, 1840, the other June 1, 1840. They appear in the 1850 census, in which Thomas is listed as a farmer with property valued at $275. Thomas died in 1872 in Screven County, Georgia. Susan died after 1900. He and Susan had thirteen (13) children:

1.David Bragg. David was born on November 17, 1842, in Georgia. He was married twice, first on February 1, 1866, in Screven County with Lucy Ann McCoy, daughter of Robert and Olive McCoy. She was born around 1845 in Georgia and died after 1878. He married a second time with his first cousin, Sarah Jane Edenfield Thomas, on March 25, 1885, in Screven County. She was born on March 26, 1868, in Screven County, and was the daughter of Henry Green Edenfield and Jane Bragg Edenfield. Jane and David's father were sister and brother. David died on November 10, 1910, in Jenkins County, Georgia. He is buried in Oak Hill Baptist Church Cemetery near Millen, Georgia. He and Lucy had six (6) children; he and Sarah Jane had nine (9) children.

2.Nancy Bragg. She was the second child of Thomas Bragg and Susan Ann Burke. She born around 1843 in Screven County. She married William Griner on January 9, 1863, in Screven County. He was born on January 12, 1845, to Johnathan Griner and Jane Parker. Nancy died on April 17, 1875. William died many years later, on May 22, 1922. He is buried in McDonald Church Cemetery in Screven County. They had three (3) children, all born in Screven County.

3.James Bragg. James was born on October 12, 1845, in Screven County. He was married on March 4, 1868, in Screven County with Nancy Dickey. She was born on August 21, 1846, in Georgia. Nancy died on September 30, 1910. James died on April 12, 1912. They are buried in Green Fork Church Cemetery in Jenkins County, Georgia. They had five (5) children, all born in Screven County.

4.Thomas Bragg. He was born in November 1847 in Screven County, Georgia. He married around 1868 with a woman named Martha M. (maiden name undetermined). She was born on December 27, 1852. Martha died on September 11, 1907, and is buried in the McDonald Church Cemetery in Screven County. They had ten (10) children, all born in Screven County:

1. Lawson George Bragg. Lawson was born on November 23, 1870. He was married on September 18, 1892, in Screven County to Laura E. Williams. She was born in July 1875 in Georgia. Lawson died on April 29, 1947, and is buried in McDonald Church Cemetery. They had two (2) children, both born in Screven County:

1. Arrie Bragg. He was born in January 1895.

2. Connie B. Bragg. Connie was born in December 1897. She was married in Screven County on October 23, 1912, with John R. Morrison.

2. William H. Bragg. He was born in January 1872. He was married on January 13, 1893, in Screven County with
Annie Alice Williams, who was born in March 1877 in Georgia. They had three (3) children:

1. Flora F. Bragg. Flora was born in August 1894 in Georgia.

2. Yancey C. Bragg. He was born in December 1896 in Screven County. He was married there on August 12, 1919,
with Lottie May Bassett.

3. Annie L. Bragg. Annie was born in September 1898 in Screven County.

3. Mary F. Bragg. She was born around 1874.

4. Crawford Arthur Bragg. Crawford was born on July 6, 1875. He was married in Screven County on December 21,
1902, with Elizabeth Joyner. She was born on December 10, 1878. She died on February 15, 1924; he died on October 29, 1951. They are buried in the Sylvania Cemetery in Screven County.

5. John Bragg. He was born in July 1878. He was married on June 2, 1901, in Screven County with A. C. Bassett.

6. Susan Bragg. Susan was born around 1879.

7. Rozzie L. Bragg. He was born in September 1880.

8. Forest D. Bragg. Forest was born in August 1881.

9. Annie L. Bragg. She was born in November 1886.

10. James Polk Bragg. James was born in January 1889. He married Lillian V. Jenkins, who was born in December 1891 in Screven County to Solomon B. Jenkins and Lucy A. Waters. James died on February 19, 1940; Lillian died on November 14, 1958. They are buried in the McDonald Church Cemetery. They had at least one child:

5.William Bragg. William was born around 1849 in Screven County, Georgia. He was married with a woman named Frances around 1872. She was born around 1850 in Georgia. William died on January 25, 1883. They had eight (8) children.

6.Lawson Bragg. He was born in February 1852 in Screven County, Georgia. He married Amanda A. Oglesby around 1869. She was born in 1854. They had eleven (11) children, all born in Screven County.

7.John Bragg. John was born in January 1854 in Screven County. He was married twice, first around 1878 with a woman named Sophia. She was born around 1861, and died sometime after 1881. His second marriage took place on October 21, 1885, in Screven County. He married his cousin, Mary F. Joyner. She was born on November 27, 1865, to John Joyner, Sr., and Sarah Frances Cubbage Joyner. John's father and Mary's grandmother, Clarissa Bragg Joyner, were brother and sister. Mary died on April 4, 1946, and is buried in Bay Branch Church Cemetery. John
had seven children, two with Sophia and five with Mary, all born in Screven County.

8.Susan Bragg. She was born around 1856 in Screven County, Georgia.

9.Elizabeth J. Bragg. Elizabeth was born in May 1857 in Screven County, Georgia. She was married around 1874 with Thomas M. Pierce, who was born in November 1852 in Georgia. They had nine (9) children, all born in Screven County.

10.Sarah Bragg. She was born around 1860 in Screven County, Georgia. She was married around 1876 with Lawson D. L. Burke. He was born in August 1853 in Screven County to W. D. S. and Joanna Burke. Sarah died after 1894. She and Lawson had six (6) children, all born in Screven County.

11.Minnie J. Bragg. Minnie was born in April 1863 in Screven County. She married James Brower on January 27,
1881, in Screven County. He was born in September 1860. They had seven (7) children, all born in Screven County.

12.Emily F. Bragg. She was born in May 1869 in Screven County, Georgia. She married John Brower on June 19, 1881, in Screven County. He was born in January 1861. They had eight (8) children, all born in Screven County.

13.Henry Bragg. Henry was born in October 1870 in Screven County. He married a distant cousin, Leona Parker, around 1899. She was the daughter of Michael and Calestis Parker. Michael Parker was also a descendant of Thomas and Clarissa Sasser.

4.John Bragg, Jr. John was born on October 1, 1817, in Screven County to the first John Bragg and Mary Sasser. He was married on May 11, 1841, in Bulloch County with Elizabeth Bragg, daughter of William Bragg. It is assumed that this William Bragg is somehow related. Elizabeth was born in January 1819. In the 1850 census John is listed as a farmer. John served in the Confederate Army. He became sick and was hospitalized in Savannah on October 25, 1864. He was sent home, where he died on October 29. Elizabeth died on July 4, 1904. She and John are buried in the Little Horse Creek Church Cemetery. They had nine or ten children, all born in Screven County.

5.Seaborn Bragg. He was born in July 1822 in Screven County. He was married twice, first on December 27, 1847, in Screven County with Elizabeth Sumner. She was born around 1830 in Georgia. On December 29, 1853, Seaborn sold his property to John Bragg, Jr., and he moved to Florida some time thereafter. In the 1860 census he is found living next door to his brother, James, in Jefferson County, Florida. By 1870 they were living in Bradford County. Elizabeth died there in the 1870s.

Seaborn married a second time with Nancy (maiden name unknown) sometime before 1880 in Florida. She was born around 1839 in Georgia. Nancy died before 1900; Seaborn died after 1900 in Florida. Seaborn had eleven children, supposedly all with Elizabeth. Their first child is estimated to have been born before they were married.

6.James Bragg. James was born about 1825 in Screven County. He was married on June 21, 1846, in Thomas County, Georgia, with his cousin, Clarissa Sasser, daughter of Thomas Sasser, Jr., and Margaret Bell Sasser.
She was born on April 3, 1826, in Screven County. They lived in Florida for a brief time but returned to Georgia. James served in the Confederate Army. He died on June 30, 1864, possibly in the war. Clarissa died on December
19, 1889, and is buried in McDonald Church Cemetery. He and Clarissa had four (4) children, all born in Georgia.

7.David L. Bragg. He was born around 1826 in Screven County. David married twice, the first time on June 27, 1847, in Screven County with Sarah Ann Taylor. She was born around 1832, and died before 1860. David married a second time before 1860 in Georgia with Jane Bazemore. Jane was born around 1836. David served as a 3rd sergeant in the Confederate Army, Company D, 54th Georgia Regiment. He died on February 12, 1866, in Georgia. David and Sarah had four (4) children, all born in Screven County.

8.William B. Bragg. He was born around 1827 in Screven County. He was married on December 16, 1849, in Screven County with Charity Jenkins. She was born around 1832 in Georgia. William served in the Confederate Army, Company D, 54th Georgia Regiment. He died after 1866. They had six (6) children, all born in Screven County.

9.Martha A. Bragg. Martha was born around 1828 in Screven County. She was married on January 30, 1846, in Screven County with John Hurst, son of Needham and Mary Hurst. John was deaf and dumb. He worked as a farmer. Martha and John both died after 1880 in Georgia. She and John had eleven (11) children, all born in Screven County.

10.Mary A. Bragg. She was born in November 1832 in Screven County. She was married on April 29, 1849, in Screven County with William Joyner, widower of Mary's sister, Clary. He was born around 1815, and died before 1900. Mary died after 1900 in Georgia. She and William had seven (7) children, all born in Screven County.

11.Margaret Bragg. She was born on January 4, 1834, in Screven County. She was married there on January 14, 1852, with William A. Taylor, Jr. William was born around 1833 in Georgia to William and Rachel Taylor. William served in the Confederate Army, Company D, 54th Regiment. He became ill with a fever in December 1864 and was hospitalized in Decatur, Alabama. He was sent home, where he died on March 12, 1865. Margaret filed for a pension for her husband's service. Margaret died on March 21, 1911, in Georgia. She and William had at least two (2) children, both born in Screven County.

12.Henry B. Bragg. Henry was born about 1837 in Screven County. He was married on December 20, 1857, in Screven County with Mary Taylor. She was born on April 22, 1834 or 1839. Henry died in the Civil War on July 4, 1864, in the Battle of Peachtree Creek. He served in Company D, 54th Georgia Regiment. He and Mary had three (3) children, all born in Screven County.

13.Littleton Bragg. He was born around 1839 in Screven County. He was married on January 30, 1859, in Screven County with his first cousin, Margaret Sasser. She was born around 1830 in Screven County to Howell Sasser and Susan A. Bell. Littleton's mother, Mary Sasser Bragg, and Margaret's father, Howell, were sister and brother. Littleton served in the Confederate Army, Company D, 54th Regiment. He died before 1870 in Georgia. Margaret died in March 1897. They had three (3) children, all born in Screven County.

14.Howell Bragg. Howell was born in December 1841 in Georgia. He served in the Confederate Army, Company D, 54th Georgia Regiment. He married twice, the first time on September 30, 1859, in Screven County with Lucretia Elizabeth Jenkins. She died after 1880. Howell married a second time on February 20, 1887, in Screven County with
Mrs. Florence Clarky Williams. She was born on October 17, 1864, in Georgia. She died before 1905; Howell died in 1906 in Georgia. He had four (4) children with his first wife; they were all born in Screven County.


15.Jasper Bragg. Jasper was born on December 18, 1844, in Screven County. He served in the Confederate Army, Company D, 54th Georgia Regiment. He was married in Screven County on November 1, 1866, with Susan McCoy. She was born on October 30, 1847, in Georgia. Susan died on February 10, 1910. Jasper died on November 22, 1925, in Georgia. They are buried in the McCoy Cemetery. They had twelve (12) children, all born in Screven County.

16. Jane E. Bragg. Jane was born on December 29, 1845, in Screven County. She was married on April 5, 1863, in Screven County with Henry Green Edenfield. He was born on November 5, 1845, in South Carolina to William Allen Edenfield and Sarah Samantha Bassett Edenfield. He died on July 15, 1919. Jane died on July 11, 1924, in Georgia. She and Henry had twelve (12) children, all born in Screven County.
