BLAST FROM THE PAST
SCHLEY COUNTY'S DILLARDS ENJOY WATERMELON FEAST
By LINDA ADAMS
In this week's "Blast from the Past" photo the Dillard kids are enjoying a watermelon feast in the back of their wagon. From left to right are Harold Dillard, his brother Vernon, his niece Virginia Grant Nicholson, his nephew Johnny Emmett "Buddy" Grant, his sister Jeane Dillard Yarbrough, and his brother Marcus. The Dillard family lived in Concord community. Harold once fought diptheria and pneumonia at the same time, with Dr. Wilson and Dr. Bridges taking turns in calling on him at home. In partial payment for their services, Harold's father brought the same wagon shown in the picture to town loaded with corn, peanut hay, syrup, and ham. He had a cow tied to the back of the wagon to complete the payment and still owed $70! The cow was kept in the yard of the Doctor's house on Wilson Street (the house facing the IGA on north Wilson St.)
