James Marion Jones


ELLAVILLE—James Marion Jones, age 94, of 139 Stevens St., Ellaville, died Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2004, at the VA hospital in Dublin. Services will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 17, at Ebenezer Baptist Church with burial to follow in the Ellaville Cemetery. The Rev. Robert Orr, the Rev. Andy Taunton and the Rev. Clarence Keene will officiate.

Mr. Jones was born Nov. 9, 1910 in Schley County, the son of Jettie Elizabeth Jones and Thomas Joseph Jones. He was a self-employed painter.

Mr. Jones was a WW II army veteran serving as a T5 Army engineer at Fort Monroe, Va. He was a member of the American Legion and Ebenezer Baptist Church. Mr. Jones was an avid fiddle player performing at many festivals across Georgia. He was named in the Georgia Music Hall of Fame for fiddle players.

Mr. Jones was preceded in death by two of his children, Roland G. Jones and Linda Grace Dowdy. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Jewel Miles Jones; six daughters, Sheila Hines and husband Winford of Americus, Jean Holland and companion Joe Allen of Cochran, Melba James of Warner Robins, Evelyn Taylor and husband Dan of Moore. Okla., Charlene Cline and husband Rick of Covington, Lavanta Kirkland and husband Foy of Kathleen; and one son, Ernest Lamar Jones and wife Bette Jo of Kansas City, Mo.; 17 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren also survive.

A visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. at Watson-Giddens Funeral Home in Ellaville. Pallbearers will include Winford Hines, Rick Cline, Dan Taylor, Wilbur Justice, Jimmy Byrd Jr. and Foy Kirkland. The Legionaires, League 27 Baseball Players, Butch Gleaton, Lamar Montgomery will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Roland wasn't killed at South Ga Tech in Americus ... he was either attending or recently graduated from that school at the time of his death.
