Fairlie (My Maternal Side)

Peter Fairlie my 5th great grandfather, was born circa, 1795 in Maybole, Ayrshire, Scotland In the United Kingdom.  Peter Fairlie (1795 - ?) married Mary McCoy (1791 - ?) in Ayrshire Scotland about 1810 and had at least two children: Maria "Mary" (1811 - ?) and Thomas (1815 -1884), my 4th great grandfather.

Marriage Banns

Thomas Fairlie (1815 - 1884) was born February 6th, 1815 in Maybole, Ayrshire, Scotland.  Thomas Fairlie married Sarah Hanvay (1826 - 1851) on June 25th, 1841 in Maybole, Ayrshire, Scotland (see marriage banns at right from the Maybole Parish of the Free Church of Scotland) and from that union they had three children: Jane (1842 - ?), Mary (1843 - ?) and Peter (1845 - after 1880), my 3rd great grandfather.  Sarah (Hanvay) Fairlie died between 1845 (Peter's birth)  and 1851 (1851 Census).  Thomas Fairlie (1815 - 1884) then married Margaret "Mary" McCulloch (1823 - 1871) on September 5th, 1852.  Thomas Fairlie died on November 2nd, 1884 in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland.

Peter Fairlie at 16 years of age is found in 1861 (Kilmarnock Scotland Census) boarding with a family by the name of Watson and listed as a worker in a coal mine.

Peter Fairlie (1845 - before 1900), my 3rd great grandfather was born in Maybole, Ayrshire, Scotland.  Peter Fairlie married Agnes Fleming (1845 - 1874), my 3rd great grandparents, on June 15th, 1866 in Kilmarncock, Ayrshire, Scotland and from that union they had three children: Jessie Fleming (1867 - 1874), Sarah Hanvay (1870 - 1918), and Marion Fleming (1872 - 1903), my 2nd great grandmother.

Agnes (Fleming) Fairlie died on December 10th, 1874 of pnuemonia in Riccarton, Ayrshire, Scotland Just a three months after her daughter Jessie died from the same affliction.  Peter Fairlie then married Jane Paton (1841 - ?) on February 15th, 1878 in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland and from that union they had two children: Mary (1879 UK - 1949 MO) and Jean (1884 MO - 1904 IL).  See the Fleming page for information on this line of the family.

In the 1881 census of Kilmarncock Scotland, Marion is found at home with her stepmother Jane (Paton) Fairle, half sister Mary, and their servant Catherine Irvine at 19 Dean Street.  Sarah, Marion's older sister is staying down the street at her Aunt Mary (Fairlie) Lyle's house at 26 Dean Street.  Probably staying the night.  Peter Fairlie is not around and I am assuming that he has left ahead of the family to find lodging and to get employed at one of the new coal mines in Randolph County, Missouri.  In the 1900 Federal Census in Springfield, Illinois, Marion and her sister Sarah both state that they came from Scotland in 1884 and their half sister Jean Fairlie was born in Missouri on February 29th 1884 which makes me think that they might have arrived a year or two sooner. addendum: I found their arrival record and it states that they arrived in New York on the 23rd of August in 1881 aboard the ship Anchoria.  They are all listed on the ships manifest except for Peter Fairlie who came earlier ( I still have not found his arrival record).  It listed Jane Fairlie and Janet (Kenmuir Jane's daughter by 1st marriage), Marion, Sarah and Mary.
