Land & Deeds

Please refer to the in-depth discussion of Land Records in the LDS Research Outline for many of the details about Land Records and their availability.  Original sale of land was done either by a Federal land grant or a State Land Grant.  States which administered original land sales are called state-lands states, and include the original 13 colonies (including Georgia), Maine, Vermont, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Texas, and Hawaii.

Since statehood, subsequent transfers of land between private owners have been recorded by the local Clerk of Court - Probate Judge in each county.

County Clerk's Office
Office Hours:
Monday through Friday - 8:15 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.

The Clerk's Office records all documents related to real property in the county, personal property liens and military discharges. The clerk also collects all transfer tax due on property sold and all intangible tax due on mortgages. The Real Estate Division is located on the first floor of the Rockdale County courthouse.

Bureau of Land Management - Searchable database for land patents.  This is a must visit site

The LDS Family History Libraries have State and County Land Records on microfilm.
