DAVIS
05 JUL 2006
I am looking for the parents of Mary Ann Davis the
second wife of John Bridwell. John Bridwell left Greenville County
SC around 1822/23. There he had been married to Rachel Cox and they had
a large family. He is next found in Edgefield county with Mary Ann Davis.
No marriage has been located.
He and Mary Ann end up in Richmond County. They also have a large family and are the head of most of the Bridwell family from the area.
I believe that Mary Ann's brother is George Davis who married Margaret King in Richmond Co. on 10 Jul 1835. I believe Mary Ann's sister may be Jane Davis who married Jesse King in Richmond County 17 May 1832.
I believe Mary Ann's mother may have been a Mary who was living with Jane Davis King and her family in the 1850 Census.
Can you help in identifying Mary Ann's parents?

HEADDEN
Several years ago, I corresponded with Ed Cashin who
told me he had written about Benjamin in his book on the history of Augusta,
but he was unable to help with a question I had.
Here is all the info I have on Benjamin:
According to family history, he won a nation-wide
contest for painting the best life-size portrait of George Washington on
his white horse. Family stories say the painting hung in the Augusta
City Hall. Benjamin's nephew and great niece said they saw
it on visis to Augusta. The niece visited in 1935.
According to an article in a Greenville, SC newspaper,
Benjamin was killed in train wreck somewhere around Greensboro, GA.
He was almost 27 at the time of his death. The following is an excerp
from the article:
"...the deceased was a native of Greenville, S.C.,
where he has left an aged father, mother, brothers, sisters, and other
relatives...He had established...fame in his profession as an artist, seldom
equalled, never surpassed..."
According to the article, he had been married for
7 months. The article states that "an embankment gave way, the train
plunged into the chasm, and several were injured, but Mr. Headden's death
is the only one mentioned."
About 29 years ago, I acquired a painting that I am
pretty sure was one of Benjamin's - it was located in a back closet at
the Headden homeplace in Cassville, GA where my g-g-great granfather William
lived after the Civil War. HIs daughter had saved the painting along
with portraits of William and his wife when the federal troops burned the
house. William and Benjamin were brothers. A distant cousin
in West Tennessee has 3 more portraits - Benjamin's parents and a cousin.
I would like to know if the Washington painting exists
and if there is any information about Benjamin. I have not been able
to locate a copy of the Cashin book
Thanks for any information anyone might be able to provide.

JOHN A. OLIVER
27 AUG 2007
I have researched everywhere for a JOHN A. OLIVER,
born in 1817 around Elberton, GA and was last in the 1900 Census for Clarke
Co. as a "boarder". His son was the Rev. John Henry Oliver, a long time
resident of Augusta who is buried with many family members in Westover
Cemetery. Since JOHN A. was an advanced age I thought perhaps he may have
come to live with his son in his later years and be buried there in Augusta,
even maybe in Westover but I cannot get any verification. Any information
would be helpful.
