ADAMS, Ira Nelson
I am searching for my G-Grandfather, said to have worked on, or owned a farm in Cedartown, Ga. He was born about 1854 and had a son, born 1876, named Ira Nelson Adams. Ira left as a teenager, but we think Martelles stayed on. Ira's mother was Margaret Savannah Smith, but was divorced from Martelles about 1881. Any info would be appreciated.

ATKINS, Joel C.
Seeking the parents of Joel C. Atkins, born July 3, 1805, in Virginia. Joel married Mary Austin sometime before 1825. Mary was born in Greenville, South Carolina. It is believed that they might have been married in DeKalb County, Georgia, in that Mary's parents lived there from the time they migrated to Georgia until their death. In 1842 the second DeKalb County courthouse burned, destroying all records except the Inferior Court Minutes (1823-1859) and one book of the Superior Court Minutes (1836-1843). The courthouse burned again in 1898. These fires most probably resulted in the lost of Joel and Mary's marriage license. Joel died August 11, 1876, in Fish Creek, Polk County, Georgia.

CARROLL, John & Lura
I am searching for information on Lura Cameron Carroll and her husband John Carroll. They were probably born around the 1860's. He died at a relatively young age --after he had sired quite a few children. Some of the daughters were--Hattie, Mamie (my grandmother), Gussie, Jimmie, Lottie. Some of the sons were--Stering (owned a retail store in Cedartown), Widson (died in 1949 when his car ran off the road into a creek and he drowned). I was told that after John died, the people of Cedartown made up money to move Lura and the children out of the country into Cedartown proper. The brick house still stands on the street right beside the viaduct on the road to Rockmart. My grandmother, Mamie, married Roscoe Mullinax, Sr. from Lake Creek. He and my father, Roscoe Jr. owned and operated a mechanic's garage in Cedartown for a number of years called Mullinax and Son. My father, mother and I moved away to Marietta 1951. I was told that the Carrolls are believed to have been buried "near the old shirt factory." Does anyone know for sure? I would like to know the couples' dates of birth and death; the names of all their children; and if the story of the townfolk building them a house is true. Any info at all would be appreciated. Thanks.

Around 1926 or '28, he left Polk County with a female named Lillie Kinney and I have not been able to find anything since that date. I have researched at ancestry.com, have put messages on message boards, have e-mailed Gary Goss who seems to have the largest databases on Goss ancestry, talked with relatives in Polk County and other states, all to no avail. It was rumored that Joel Edward (Joe) left GA and either went to SC or NC. I have checked death records in both states, as well as GA, all to no avail. Haynie, Rosa M
The last time I have found her was in Paulding County on the 1900 census with her father it showed her to be 4 years old. He was living with his mother-in-law Martha Davis and was shown as W. A. Haynie (boarder). His real name was William Martin Haynie but somehow the initials got listed wrong. Later William Martin remarried Mary Ada Brown and lived in Polk. I have heard that Rose married but I do not know where or to whom. I have not had access to the 1910 census, therefore, I do not know if she was still with him then or not.

He was a member of Lake Creek Baptist Church, where he was a loyal and faithful member for many years. He leaves five sisters and two brothers to mourn his loss - Messrs. I just have a "hunch" she may have married in COBB Co Ga between 1870-1880 as she is not living with her widowed mother on the 1880 Paulding Co Ga census and her sister Sarah Jane married Elisha Clanton in Cobb Co Ga in 1872....
GG Aunt Kate died between 12 Oct 1928 and 03 Jul 1939 when her brother Thomas B. Smith died in Polk Co Ga.
I checked the 1920 and 1930 censuses for "Prospect, Jasper Co Ga, Prospect, Franklin Co Ga, Polk Co Ga, and all of Ga for Ruth, Catherine, Kate, R, C, K with last name Henry and came up with zilch.
Is there another "Prospect, Ga" ???
Aunt Kate's parents were James Davenport SMITH & Mary Martha Elizabeth [SHAW] who married in 1850. All of the above birthdates were from their family Bible pages my Great Grandma Mrs Alice Idonia [Smith] CRABB copied from whoever had it when the family held a Smith Reunion in Polk Co Ga held 30 Jul 1939....but still, they could be off a little...?
Husband's of Aunt Kate's sisters:
Mary Elizabeth married Mr ___ McWauell (spelling wrong ???)
Sarah Jane married Elisha Clanton & died in Alabama
Arrovia "Rovia" married Thomas Riley Mullinax after 1928
Alice Idonia married Charles White Crabb & died in Texas
Lillian Doveye married James Wilburn Wilkins & died in Fla
I don't know who Susan Frances married but per her mother, she was still living in 1900.
Wives of Aunt Kate's brothers:
James Henry never married (always lived with sister Rovia)
Thomas Butler Smith married Mary Alma [Moseley]
I don't know who John Gibson married
I don't know who William Washington married but per his mother, he was still living in 1900.
My GG-Grandpa James Davenport Smith died in June 1879 in Paulding Co Ga and my GG-Grandma Mary Martha Elizabeth [Shaw] died after the 1900 Polk Co Ga census was taken.

My mother's grandfather was Richard Pierce resided in Albertville, Al. When he died it was reported that his body was placed on a train and shipped to Ga. and Indians met the train and buried him in Cedartown, Ga. This would be in the early 1920's. His wife Mary Bonds Pierce is buried at Pleasant Grove in Albertville, Al. born 1861 died 1922. My dad's grandfather was Jim England in Lawrence/Winston county, Al. He married a Mary Nicholson whose family was reported to be Cherokee escaped from the trail of tears. I think Nicholson's wife was a Peggy or Patty Farley. We have a picture of her in the family. Also one of my greatgrandmother's married a Sewell and was reported to be stolen from a stockade in Ga. during the trail of tears and they resided in Lawrence/Winston Co. around the Bankhead Forest. The England's owned a lot of property where the Pinetorch church sits and a lot of my ancestors are buried there. I would appreciate any information you could give me.

Green, Maya/other/male Ga/Ga/Ga/single/ "at home"

Mrs Ruby [SELF] Smith and her husband John Gipson SMITH -I'm waylaid every way I turn! My GG-Uncle John Gipson/ Gibson SMITH was buried at the "family cemetery near Cave Spring, Ga, on Sunday, 04 Jun 1933" according to his 03 Jun 1933 obituary in the Gadsden (Al) Times. He has a sister and a brother buried at the New Prospect Cemetery - is this in Cave Spring or Rome? He was living in Gadsden, Etowah Co Al when he died but, frustratingly, his Alabama obituary does not name his wife or his 2 married daughters Louise and Ruby Alice. His wife was Ruby A. [Self] daughter of Samuel C. Self & Maggie [unknown] shown on the above 1880 Polk Co Ga census and Ruby was 3 years old. I cannot find her death record so I'm hoping she is buried beside GG-Uncle John.....???
If you know anything about any of the children of Samuel & Maggie SELF I would be so deeply grateful if you would share it with me as it might lead to information on Ruby and her daughters.
Thankyou so very much for any help! 5-14-2003

SMITH, John A
I am searching for any SMITH family members who may have knowledge of my great grandfather James A. SMITH and his wife Melissa Riley SMITH. They came from Franklin County to Polk about 1856-1857 and apparently had two children when they were in Polk County (at Cedartown) my grandfather Alfred Mathew Smith born 28 July 1857 and his sister Julia E. Smith born 7 December 1858. They were living in Fayette County Alabama on the 1860 census where they died. Why did they leave Franklin County to go to Polk County? Were there other SMITH relatives there? And did any other SMITH family members move to Fayette County with them?

Information on my grandaddy's death certificate lists his father's name as "Bud Tolbert". Grandfather was born in 1885 in the western part of Georgia. There are no "Bud Tolberts listed on the 1880 census, but there is a B.F. Tolbert, 24 years old, wife Anna, age 20 and a son named Tom listed. Could this be Bud?
