Vernon Cemetery

Location: From Hwy 278 in Hiram, take Hwy. 92 North 2 miles.  Turn right onto Mt. Vernon Church Road (Mt. Vernon Church Rd is between Hwy 120 and Macland Rd).  Go 3/10 mile, cemetery is on right, next to Mt. Vernon Baptist Church.

History:  In 1880 Elizabeh Calley sold 196 acres of land but retained one acre "for use of a grave yard and school house". The school was built and called the "Vernon School". The building stood for many years until it was replaced by the present Church.   Cemetery is not part of the church. 

Per [an error occurred while processing this directive] :  This cemetery is not part of the church.  The cemetery was started in 1849 by the Calley family, property owned by Peleg Calley. (He is shown in the listing as Polly Calley) Peleg's daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Rainwater Calley, reserved one acre of the property for the cemetery when she sold the land in Oct. 1880 prior to moving to AR. The Mt. Vernon Baptist Church purchased the property next door in 1892 and later on built their church. The church has nothing to do with the cemetery. 

The cemetery is quite old and has some unusual tombstones. As markers someone decided to make a rectangle of cement and carve the person's name to mark the spot where he or she was buried. These markers still exist today.
