Thomas Howard Dozier

Thomas Howard Dozier was born in Oglethorpe County, on October 10, 1834. Son of Augustus Dozier and Martha E. Howard Dozier. He graduated from Emory College, taking an A.B. degree in 1856, and moved to Clarke 'County in 1886, after spending boyhood days in school at Lexington and serving Oglethorpe County as School Commissioner.

Captain Dozier's first wife was Miss Hattie Arnold of Wilkes County, and to this union were born the following children: L. G. Dozier, now deceased, A. W. Dozier, J. H. Dozier, W. B. Dozier, O. A. Dozier, T. H. Dozier, Jr., Miss Mary Dozier, Mrs. J. R. Tuck, Mrs. W. D. Branch and Mrs. H. D. Bunn, now deceased. His second wife was Miss Mary Hutcheson.

Captain Dozier served four years in Company K, 6th Georgia Regiment in General Alfred H. Colquitt's Brigade, fighting in nearly all the battles of Virginia, in the siege of Charleston, and at the battle of Oulustia, Florida. He was wounded, and taken prisoner in the battle of Sharpesburg, Maryland, in 1862, paroled after five days, exchanged two months later, and went back into the service. He has been County School Superintendent of Clarke County for the past twenty-six years, and although eighty-nine years of age at this time, is actively engaged in the duties of this office, rendering capable and efficient service.
