J. B. Dillard, M.D.

The subject of this sketch comes of Virginia parentage on both sides. His father, J. B. Dillard, was born in the "old Dominion" State in the year 1801, and moved with his parents to Oglethorpe County, Ga., in 1813. He was therefore mainly reared in Oglethorpe County, and passed almost all his life there. He was a good, substantial farmer, reasonably successful, well connected and well respected, lived a life of usefulness and sobriety and died a peaceful death, passing away in the seventy-fifth year of his age. His wife, mother of the subject of this sketch, was a Miss Ellington and a descendant of an old Virginia family, not many of whom, however, are found in Georgia. The fruits of this union were five children, namely: J. B., our subject, James, Robert, Fielding and Lizzie.

J. B. Dillard was born in Oglethorpe County, on the old family homestead, on the 25th day of May, 1835. He was reared there to the age of seventeen. He was educated at the State University, at Oxford, Georgia; read medicine with Dr. Edward Perry, of Newburn, Ga., and attended lectures at the Philadelphia Medical College. He located at Newburn, in Newton County, and began the practice of medicine. Subsequently he moved to Bellton, in Hall County. Here he pursued the practice and engaged also in farming for some years unitl he located in Union Point, Greene County, his present residence.

On October 15, 1856, Dr. Dillard married Miss Harwell, who is a descendant of an old Jasper County family. To this union have been born the following children: Lula, Minnie, S. H., Mattie, Nonia, James, Mary, Joseph and Rossmer.

Dr. Dillard has been in the practice of medicine many years and has succeeded beyond the average of country practitioners. He has educated and started into the practice his oldest son, Dr. S. H., who promises to make a worthy successor of his father. Dr. Dillard not only enjoys the reputation of a successful physician, but bears that also of an honorable, christian gentleman, having been an active and consistent member of the Methodist Church since he was twelve years of age.
