Families of Muscogee County Georgia - Spano Family

SPANO Family

Antonino Spano and Anna Sciacchitano of Lipari, Italy, had five sons. These five sons all emigrated to the United States between 1892 and 1901. They had an uncle, Salvador Spano, who owned oyster beds in Apalachicola, Florida. They all first came to Apalachicola where they worked for their uncle until they could return to Lipari for their families.

The oldest son, Angelo, was taking oysters and fish up the Chattahoochee River to Columbus to sell them. Eventually he opened a seafood market and restaurant in Columbus and moved his family there.

The second son, Antonio, who had a produce Market in Apalachicola, moved to Columbus several years late and opened his market there. He also made and repaired shoes in a room of his market.

The third son, Salvadore, and the fifth son, Bartolomeo, ended up in Birmingham, Alabama in similar enterprises.

The fourth son, Nicola, remained in Apalachicola in the seafood business.

I have placed my research in book form and a copy is now in the genealogy section of the Bradley Library in Columbus.
