Company K, 1st Volunteer Regiment

The 1st Volunteer (Olmstead's) Regiment of Georgia was created by act of the Georgia legislature in 1852. Although it was to have been officially designated as the 9th Georgia Infantry, the men of the unit continued to use its original designation. Company K, the "Washington Volunteers" of Chatham County, was formed in September 1862 and fought at Fort Pulaski, GA, 10 April 1862. When the fort surrendered, they were held at Governor’s Island, New York Harbor, and Fort Delaware, Delaware before being exchanged. They also served at the Siege of Morris Island, June 1862. In May 1864, they joined the Army of Tennessee at Dalton, GA and served Mercer's Brigade in Georgia and the Carolinas at such battles as Jonesboro and Atlanta before surrendering with Gen. Joseph Johnson in April 1865.

James Higgs, enlisted September 1862, private; captured at Fort Pulaski, April 11, 1862; appointed third sergeant, December 7, 1863; wounded in leg requiring amputation, Bentonville, NC, March 1865; surrendered at Greensboro, NC, April 26, 1865.

Alexander G. McArthur, enlisted August 1861, private; third sergeant, September 13, 1861; lieutenant, January 1862; captured Fort Pulaski, April 11, 1862; ordnance officer in Savannah, October 26, 1863 - February 29, 1864.
