Company H, 63rd Georgia Infantry

Company H, 63rd Georgia Infantry "Phoenix" Regiment, Mercer’s Brigade, Army of Tennessee, was formed in November 1862 from men enlisted from Jefferson, Laurens, Montgomery, and possibly other counties. Originally the 63rd Regiment was the 13th Georgia Infantry Battalion but was re-designated as the 63rd Georgia Infantry Regiment in May - June 1863. For most of the war the 63rd Regiment was a combined infantry/artillery unit that served on the coast, chiefly at Thunderbolt and Rosedew Island. In May 1864, they joined the Army of Tennessee and fought in the same campaigns as the 1st Volunteer Regiment of Georgia (Olmsteads’s). The 63rd Georgia served with distinction at the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain. It was merged with other Georgia units to form the 1st Georgia regiment, just prior to their surrender.
