Company A, 4th Georgia Sharpshooters

Company A, 4th (Caswell's), Georgia Sharpshooters Battalion, Bates' Brigade, Stewart's Division, Hardee's Corps, Army of Tennessee was formed August 24, 1861. Originally this unit was Company G, one of six companies that made up Lieutenant Colonel M.A. Stovall's 3rd Battalion, Georgia Volunteer Infantry. On May 4, 1863, the 3rd and 9th Battalions of Georgia Infantry were consolidated into the 3rd Regiment under Stovall. This company, re-designated company A, and two other companies were broken off and formed into the 4th Sharpshooters Battalion under Major T. I. Caswell. Arriving in Lynchburg, VA in 1862, they were almost immediately sent to Goldsboro, NC for almost two months to quell local disturbances. Returning to Richmond, VA, they were hardly off their train when they were ordered to Tennessee to stop Union bridge burners. They were in the Atlanta Campaign from beginning to end and their battles included Cumberland Gap; Richmond, KY; Murfreesboro, TN; Hoover's Gap, TN; McLemore's Cove, GA; Chickamauga; Missionary Ridge; Tunnel Hill; Resaca; Dallas; Kennesaw Mountain; Pine Mountain; Peachtree Creek; Atlanta; Jonesboro; Franklin; Murfreesboro; and Nashville. They held a critical position at the Battle of Spring Hill, fought the day before the Battle of Franklin, TN. For their history, see the biographical sketch of Captain T. R. Kendall, Civil War Miscellaneous Collection, Georgia Department of Archives and History. Georgia Civil War historian Joseph T. Derry wrote of the 4th Sharpshooters "it did its duty well on every field."
