Marion County, Georgia History

Marion County, Georgia was created in 1827 from Lee, Muscogee, and Stewart Counties. It was Georgia's 72nd county, and was named for the Revolutionary War hero General Francis Marion. The land in what became Marion County was distributed in Georgia's 1827 Land Lottery. U.S. Census reports are available for this county from 1830 to 1880 and 1900 to 1920. Most county records begin in 1846, as the majority of prior records were destroyed in an 1845 courthouse fire. The county seat is Buena Vista.
