The letters and portions of other documents on these pages were written to and by Leander F. Crumley and his family members, or contracted with his decendants, during a period from 1853 until 1910.

Leander was my gggrandfather and lived in Habersham and White Counties. He, his brother and brothers-in-law enlisted in the Confederate army when the "Tories" invaded. (Yes, at one point, the Union army was referred to as "Tories".) Leander never saw much battle and died at home while on leave from the effects of starvation and dysentery on March 30, 1863. 

Leander's youngest son, Warren, moved his family to the Oglethorpe and Clarke County area with hopes of finding a better life after being unsuccessful in the mountainous area of White County.  He became a sharecropper for the infamous Jim Smith in hopes of having a better life. To a degree, this was realized, but he never had the farm he had hoped for.  Most of Warren's decendents settled in Madison County with a few in Clarke. 

These letters and papers were handed down to Warren's daughter, my Great Aunt Lou Crumley.  She was an old maid, and from her, the letters ended up with her nephew Leonard Kirk. It was through his and his son's generosity that I obtained a copy of these letters. I first transcribed them in the mid 1980s by typewriter. In 1997, I was at it again on my desktop computer.

I have transcribed these letters as close to the originals in wording, spelling (or should I say, misspelling), and punctuation as possible. I hope you enjoy reading them and using them for reference materials as much as I have enjoyed transcribing them.

 Henry Morgan Crumley and Sarah Ann Duckett

Henry Morgan Crumley was born circa 1789 in Newberry County, South Carolina, and died 1859 in Gordon County, Georgia.  He married Sarah Ann Duckett circa 1815 in South Carolina.  Sarah was born circa 1795 in South Carolina and died 1859 in Gordon County, Georgia.

Children of Henry and Sarah Duckett Crumley:

1. Rachel CRUMLEY born circa 1815 in Spartanburg County, South Carolina; died in Crossville, Dekalb County, Alabama; married James P. HOWARD circa 1836 in Georgia.

2. Unknown CRUMLEY born circa 1817 in Buncombe County, South Carolina.

3. William CRUMLEY born circa 1819 in Buncombe County, South Carolina.

4. Henry Morgan CRUMLEY, Jr.  born 6 Jul 1821 in Buncombe County, South Carolina; died circa 1860; buried in Concord Baptist Church Cemetery, Chattanooga, Tennessee.

5. James Benjamin "Ben" CRUMLEY born circa 1823 in Buncombe County, South Carolina.

6.  John Clarke "Jack" CRUMLEY born 28 Jan 1825 in Habersham County, Georgia; died 3 Aug 1891 in Crossville, Dekalb County, Alabama; married Jane CRUMLEY.

7. Sarah Jane CRUMLEY born circa 1827 in Habersham County, Georgia; married Spencer Watters.

8. Leander F. CRUMLEY born 10 Jun 1829 in Habersham County, Georgia; died 30 Mar 1863 in White County, Georgia; buried at Calvary Baptist Church in Cleveland, Georgia; married Nancy E. Jackson 27 Sep 1852 in Habersham County, Georgia.

9. Francis Marion CRUMLEY born 26 May 1832 in White County, Georgia; died 30 Dec 1889 in White County, Georgia; married Emily Caroline LEDFORD 21 Dec 1852 in White County, Georgia.

Leander F. Crumley and Nancy E. Jackson

Leander F. "Dock" Crumley was born 10 Jun 1829 in Habersham County, Georgia.  He married Nancy E. Jackson on 27 Sep 1852 in Habersham County, Georgia.   Nancy was born 2 Feb 1834 in Georgia; she was the daughter of Hardy and Violet Jackson.  On 4 Mar 1862, Leander enlisted in the Confederate Army as a private in Co. B, 52nd Georgia Infantry "Cleveland Volunteers" (see roster). He died of disease on 30 Mar 1863 at home in White County, Georgia, and was buried at Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery in Cleveland, White County.  Nancy Jackson Crumley died on 23 Jul 1903 in White County, Georgia and was buried at Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery (now named Friendship Luthern) in White County, Georgia.

Children of Leander and Nancy Jackson Crumley:

1.  John Henry Hardy CRUMLEY  born 23 Jun 1853 in White County, Georgia; died June 1916.

2. William Merrida CRUMLEY  born 21 Apr 1855 in White County, Georgia; died February 1922.

3. Sarah Jane CRUMLEY  born 17 Mar 1857 in White County, Georgia; died 28 Dec 1926 in White County, Georgia; married Danile C. WESTMORELAND 17 Oct 1873 in White County, Georgia.

4. James Alexander CRUMLEY  born 15 Apr 1859 in White County, Georiga; died 18 Jun 1933 in Habersham County, Georgia; married Sallie ROBINSON.

5. Warren Jacob Herschfelder CRUMLEY  born 27 Aug 1861 in White County, Georgia; died 9 Jul 1922 in Athens, Clarke County, Georgia; married Rachel Amande CASON.

Warren Jacob Herschfelder Crumley was born 27 Aug 1861 in White County, Georgia, and died 9 Jul 1922 in Athens, Clarke County, Georgia (see obituary).   He married Rachel Amande Cason.  Rachel was born 8 May 1856 in White County, Georgia and died 1 May 1938 in Madison County, Georgia (see obituary).   Warren and Rachel are both buried at the Coile Cemetery, Old Elberton Rd., Clarke County, Georgia.

Children of Warren and Rachel Cason Crumley:

1.  Eliza Elizabeth CRUMELY born 24 Aug 1886 in White County, Georgia; died 2 Jul 1964 in Athens, Clarke County, Georgia; married William J. LOYD. 

2. James Franklin "Frank" CRUMLEY born 7 Mar 1888 in White County, Georgia; died 16 Sep 1951 in Athens, Clarke County, Georgia (see obituary); married Annie Dora SORROW 26 Oct 1919 in Madison County, Georgia.  Annie was the daughter of Albert Gibson Sorrow and Linnie Burroughs; she was born 10 Jul 1897 in Madison County, Georgia and died 28 Jan 1995 in Madison County, Georgia (see obituary).   Frank and Annie were buried at the Murry Nelms (aka Sorrow-Mann) Cemetery in Madison County, Georgia (see tombstones: Frank - Annie).

3.  William Henry CRUMLEY born 12 Aug 1889 in White County, Georgia; died 10 Feb 1890 in White County, Georgia.

4.  Charles Leonard "Charlie" CRUMLEY born 10 Feb 1891 in White County, Georgia; died 5 May 1951 in Athens, Clarke County, Georgia (see obituary).   He is buried at the Coile Cemetery, Old Elberton Rd., Clarke County, Georga (see tombstone).

5.  Unnamed Son CRUMLEY born and died 10 Jun 1893 in White County, Georgia.

6.  Lou Emma CRUMLEY born 10 Jun 1894 in White County, Georgia; died 7 Jun 1971 in Madison County, Georgia.  She is buried at the Coile Cemetery, Old Elberton Rd., Clarke County, Georga (see tombstone).

7.  Lethie Jane CRUMLEY born 15 Oct 1897 in White County, Georgia; died 6 May 1935 in Madison County, Georgia (see obituary); married David Haddon KIRK 25 Jan 1913 in Madison County, Georgia.  David was the son of William Kirk and Mary Gunnells; he was born 11 Sep 1893 in Madison County, Georgia and died 24 Sep 1971.  David and Lethie were buried at the Kirk Cemetery in Madison County, Georgia.
