John Henry "Doc" Holliday (1851-1887)

Son of Henry Burroughs Holliday and Alice Jane McKey

He was born in Griffin Georgia, and his family moved to Valdosta in 1864.

His mother died of tuberculosis there in 1866. His mother married second to Rachel Martin a short time later.

John Henry attended the Valdosta Institute and received a classical edication including Latin, French and Ancient Greek.  He earned a doctorate in dentistry from Pennsylvania College of Dental Surgery in 1872.

He practiced dentistry first in St Louis, MO then relocating to Atlanta. Shortly after starting his dental practice he was diagnosed with tuberculosis and was told that a drier, warmer climate might slow the deterioration of his health.  He left for Dallas and joined another dental practice which was dissolved in 1874.

Doc opened another dental practice but it slowly declined due to his health.  He found that he had some skill at gambling and left for Denver.  He moved from place to place in the West, and eventually befriended Wyatt Earp.
