Hardy Smith, ca 1900. He was born 1841. He is wearing his confederate uniform. During the Civil War he served in Co H, 14th Regt Georgia Volunteer Infantry. He attained the rank of captain by the end of the war. He was wounded and lost his right arm in one of the battles. After the war he held several county posts and managed business interests.

Private Bill Yopp, a Laurens County soldier, is the only African American Confederate soldier buried in the Confederate Cemetery in Marietta.
