Chamber of Commerce - Jones County History

"I reside a mile north of Gray in Jones County, and will be happy to answer questions about Gray and the community of Jones County. I'm not a historian though. Gray is 16 miles north of Macon on US 129. It's about 18 miles southwest of Milledgeville. Our Probate Judge is Mike Green and his office is located in the Jones County Courthouse (There is also a Jones County Government Center 1 mile north of Gray on GA Hwy 11 that holds other government offices). David V. Clinard" ([email protected])

Macon and Milledgeville are both within a short drive and both have many very good restaurants as well.

Things to Do:

OLD CLINTON HISTORIC DISTRICT

OLD CLINTON WAR DAYS
Held annually the first weekend in May. Civil War re-enactment of the Battle of Griswoldville, and the Battle of Sunshine Church by Georgia's 16th Regiment. Arts and crafts, food vendors, historic tours, and exciting entertainment for all ages.

JARRELL PLANTATION
The B&B on the Jarrell Plantation site is wonderful. Phillip and Amelia Haynes are the caretakers and live in the home and have great hospitality. They really enjoy genealogy and the Plantation staff can really assist those in search of Jones County history ... The home is the site of our annual Jarrell Family Reunion in the fall ... Meredith Plantation about 15 - 20 miles from Gray but still in Jones County.

PIEDMONT NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE

Research in the Courthouse

Contributed by: Myrl Ross We were in Jones County in the summer of '98. We found the people in the courthouse to be most helpful..to the point where the clerk there phoned a friend to see if he could help me locate a Davis cemetery in the Hillsboro area. The courthouse in Gray is small but the people were extremely cordial.

We stayed in Macon and it was a very short trip to Gray. In the library [Washington Memorial] in Macon, we looked at maps of the area. It did have [land] lot numbers but it was difficult to pinpoint a particular area. The people there were very patient and helpful. A beautiful city to boot.
