Jones was educated at an academy in Augusta and at the age of 18 he studied law in Augusta, GA. In May of 1798 he was a member of the State Convention which framed the Constitution of Georgia which asserted her rights to her western territory (now Alabama and Mississippi).

He was elected to Congress in 1798. Jones was opposed to John Adams and contributed much in casting Georgia's vote for Thomas Jefferson. He died in Washington, D.C. on January 19,1801, when he was only 32 years old. He is buried in Arlington by the side of another outstanding Georgian
NOTE: He actually died on January 11, 1801, in Washington, D.C.; interment in the Congressional Cemetery. and a friend of his, Gen. James Jackson.

James Jones married the widow of John Millen, Sally Eppinger Millen, in 1792. James Jones will is recorded in Book A, Chatham County Courthouse.

 Jones Co was formed by an act of the Legislature December 10, 1807 from original Baldwin County which was formed May 11, 1803. Jones County was laid out in 1807; part added from Putnam in 1810; a five mile slice given to Bibb in 1822, and since then her boundaries have remained stationary.

There were several ferries or flats spanning the river before the bridges were built, Glover or Smith Ferry on the Ocmulgee Rivere, before the Toll Bridge. Little or Browns Ferry was one mile below Juliette on the Ocmulgee River near Mr. Bert Bowdoin's homeplace. White or Mitchell Ferry was on the Ocmulgee River several miles below Juliette. Head or Goggan's Ferry was on the Towaliga River two miles above Juliette. Bridges Ferry was on the Ocmulgee River four miles above Juliette. Submitted by Virginia Williams
