DANIEL WOOD CEMETERY
This small cemetery is located on the property that was the home place of Daniel Wood and his wife Elizabeth Allen Wood.
Daniel was the son of early settlers in Jackson County, James Wood who came from South Carolina and Mariah Porter who came from Virginia. James and Mariah were married in Jackson County in 1814. Daniel served the Confederacy in the War Between the States and was captured April 6, 1865. He was sent to prison at Newport News, VA. but his discharge and release came just 3 days later with the surrender at Appomattox on April 9, 1865.
Elizabeth Allen was the daughter of Hiram Allen who came to Jackson County from South Carolina. Elizabeth "Betsey" was born in 1838, the first of her family to be born in Georgia. Her known siblings, by Hiram Allen and his first wife, are Titus G. Allen, who died at Gettysburg, and Isam Allen.
Daniel and Elizabeth were married October 4, 1866 in Jackson County and lived out their lives there. They had seven children in all. . The only named child that does not show up in the cemetery is Samuel Wood who was born in 1868. Samuel apparently died young because he was not in the family on the 1880 census.

Daniel Wood left a will dated May 8, 1883 that was probated September 3, 1883. The will names his wife Elizabeth and his children Daniel Webster Wood, Benjamin Franklin Wood and Mary Elizabeth Wood.
