NIBLACK FAMILY CEMETERY

                                    NIBLACK FAMILY CEMETERY

The community where the cemetery is situated was known as Virgil and early obituaries refer to burials in the Virgil Cemetery. Later, it became more commonly called the Niblack family cemetery.  The cemetery represents the descendants of two daughters of James Montgomery, Jane, who married James Appleby, and Margaret, who married Thomas Niblack.

Thomas Niblack died in Jackson County after the 1840 census and before July 4, 1842 when his will was probated.  Margaret accompanied some of her children to Tyler, TX, Smith County, after the 1850 census and died there of pneumonia in April of 1860 at the age of 82.

Hugh Niblack was the son of Margaret and Thomas. His wife, Emily Howard, was the daughter of Hardy Howard and Elizabeth Camp and granddaughter of Nathaniel Camp. Hugh and Emily had 12 children, 6 of which are buried in the family cemetery.  Their children were these:

-Elizabeth T. P.

The most unusual grave in the cemetery has no name.
If anyone knows who is buried here, please let me know.

I have since heard from Bonnie Pierce Bell [email protected] whose husband William Park Bell is a descendant of Thomas and Margaret Montgomery Niblack.  They identify this grave as that of Thomas Niblack.  They got their information from Mrs. Stoy Bell who, in turn, got it from Ada Niblack, Thomas's granddaughter.

Bonnie also relates an interesting story about the metal cover on the grave "--after Margaret  Niblack went to Texas, Hugh Niblack and his children purchased the iron cover and put on Thomas Niblack's grave.  After Hugh Niblack died, his sons removed the cover and put it on Hugh Niblack's grave.  Later Emily Howard Niblack (Hugh's wife) died they put a tombstone on Hugh and Emily Howard Niblack's grave and at that time they moved the cover back to Thomas Niblack's grave."
