JOSEPH HARRIS FAMILY

Joseph Harris was born in Pennsylvania in October 1749, but he spent the majority of his life in the South.
First he lived on the Rocky River in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, where his family was known
as the  “Rocky River Harrises.”  By 1792, Joseph was living in Greene County, Georgia, in an area that
had originally been part of Washington County.  Eventually Joseph settled in Jackson County, Georgia,
where he lived for the remainder of his life.  Joseph Harris was married twice.  Nothing is known of his
first wife; his second wife was Elizabeth Cribbs, who was born in 1774 in North Carolina.   Joseph and
Elizabeth were married August 1794 in Greene County, Georgia.

During the Revolutionary War, Joseph Harris was a private in the North Carolina militia.  In 1832, he was awarded a pension, and after his death, his wife Elizabeth received a widow’s pension.  Joseph’s pension application gives the names and birth dates of all of his children.

Joseph filed a will in Jackson County on September 2, 1839.  He died shortly thereafter, on October 10 of the same year.  His wife Elizabeth died in 1851, and the couple is probably buried somewhere in Jackson County.

Salathiel Adams Harris

Salathiel Adams Harris served in the Civil War and lived to be 100 years old.  His first wife Nancy was the daughter of James Langston and Nancy (Styles) Springfield, who were first cousins (James’ mother was Dicey Langston, a Revolutionary War heroine from South Carolina, while his wife Nancy was the daughter of Dicey Langston’s sister, Selah Langston).  Salathiel Adams Harris and his wife Nancy (Springfield) had the following children:  Joseph Marion, James A., John F., Sarah E., Walton M., Andrew Jackson, Nancy Jane, Mary A., Salathiel T., Martha Melvin, and Isabella “Belle.”

Walton M. Harris, his wife Fannie (Rubottom),

foster child Will Middleton, and (unknown) baby who died

Joseph Marion Harris married Susan Lavona Hunter, and his younger brother Walton M. Harris married Fannie Rubottom.  After both Joseph and Fannie died, Walton married Susan (Hunter) Harris, his brother’s widow.  Of Salathiel Adams Harris’s children, it appears that Walton, who moved to Oklahoma, outlived his siblings.

2)  Asa T. Harris          m.   a McGhee

                                      3)  Nancy Harris          m.   23 February 1846, Murray County, Georgia, John Franklin McGhee

This couple also went to Wayne County, Missouri.  (Note:  John Franklin McGhee’s

mother was Mary Harris, possibly Joseph Harris, Sr.’s oldest daughter.)

After her husband Joseph died, Nancy (Metcalf/Midkiff) Harris married (---) Brumbelow, who apparently died before 1850. With her second husband, Nancy had two more children, Samuel Jack Brumbelow and Mary J. Brumbelow.  In 1850, Nancy was living with three of her children, Asa, Samuel Jack, and Mary J., in Murray County, Georgia.  By 1860, she had gone to live with her son Salathiel in Wayne County, Missouri, where she remained until her death.  Her daughter Mary Brumbelow stayed in Murray County, Georgia, while her sons Asa Harris and Samuel Jack Brumbelow also moved to Wayne County, Missouri.
