Ebenezer Methodist Church was organized about 1832. The first name found on the membership roll was Sarah E. O'Bryant. The pastor at that time was Rev. J. W. Glenn. The original church was located on the John Hancock estate, about one mile from the current location. Mr. L. H. Kesler is buried on the site of the third location. In 1929 or 1930, the church was moved across the road near the oak trees, north of the present church and near the concrete tables.
The first marriage recorded was the marriage of Joseph F. Fulcher and Ida Lay. The first baptism is recorded is Julius Duncan Seymour, son of Sidney and Alice Seymour. The Rev. J. W. Stypes baptized this child in August 1897, along with four other children, who were Ruby Grace Seymour, Dot Allen, Rena May Lyle and Effistelle Lyle.
During one year, possibly 1896-7 J. O. Harrison, secretary of Ebenezer reported one removed by certificate and one by death, with an increase of twenty-seven making a total membership of seventy-three. Ebenezer owes its present building and land to a man who greatly loved it. "Uncle Buddy" Chandler willed 269 acres to the church. Due to court cost and lawyer fees that was brought down to five acres, with the road running approximately through the middle. It is a square lot of land with church on one side of the road and cemetery on the other side.
The church was dedicated on March 7, 1948. The Rev. McLowery Elrod preached the sermon; however, Rev. Truman Thomas was the pastor at the time.
It is believed that the cemetery originally started on the hill and much further back into the woods, because there is Vinca Minor, also called creeping myrtle, periwinkle or simply the cemetery grass covering that area. Vinca Minor is a short evergreen plant that produces a blue flower in spring and was widely used in cemeteries in the 19th century to pay tribute to the dead and to choke out the weeds. This is the same "ground covering" found at the Allen-Doleska Cooley cemetery.
There are many stones, with no markings located within the cemetery. If anyone can identify any of these, it would be greatly appreciated.
The oldest recorded grave is Nancy McEver, b. 1815 and d. 1876 then there was Mary Wood, no birth date with a burial date of December 26, 1882. The oldest couple found buried in the cemetery is Mr.(1897) and Mrs.(1894) A. H. Black. The last person recorded is Helen Hammond who was buried Sept. 27, 2001.
The family with the most burials are the Potters with 22, Allens right behind them with 18, coming on down to the Lyles with 14 and Dosters & Roberts rounding out the majority with 10 each.
