Harris County: Abstracts from Columbus Enquirer Newspaper

29 May 1828

Citizens Meeting to plan the 4th of July celebration.

Committees appointed, consisting of: Lemuel Gresham, Jacob M. Guerry, H. J. Harwell, Thomas L. Jackson, General Allen Lawhon, Thomas Mahone, Col D. McDougald, Col William Mason, George W. Rogers, M. J. Wellborn, Lewis Wynn. Col William C. Osborn was selected as the orator of the day, with Thomas L. Jackson as the reader of the Declaration of Independence.

The celebration to be held in Hamilton.

Jacob M. Guerry & Thomas L. Jackson are now associated in a law firm in Hamilton.

26 Mar 1831

New Post Office established at Mulberry Grove, Harris Co, 13 miles from Columbus, on the road to Franklin. John Hubbard the postmaster.

Also, new Post Office established on the same route, at Mountain Creek. Henry Whitaker, postmaster.

11 Feb 1832

Two horses either strayed or stolen on Jan 21 near Hamilton.

Descriptions included on the animals. Property of H. M. N. Graham.

24 Mar 1832

Married-In Harris Co, Mr Hiram W. Brooks of Apalachicola, Fla to Miss Sarah E. Mitchell, the second dau of Major John Mitchell of Harris Co, on Wednesday last. By J. Bedell, Esq.

31 Mar 1832

Dr J. J. Broswell has now permanently established his practice in Hamilton, Harris Co.

Perry Ozier vs Elizabeth Ozier

The standard form for this Rule to Perfect Services being:

"It appearing to the Court by the return of the Sheriff, that the defendant does not reside in this county and it further appearing that she does not reside in this state. It is on motion of Council, ordered that said defendant appear and answer at the next term of this Court-else that the case be considered in default and the Plaintiff allowed to pro-ceed. And it is further ordered that this rule be published in the Columbus Enquirer once a month for 4 months."

"Clerk's Office Superior Court 13th March, 1832. I do hereby certify that the above is a true extract from the minutes of said Court. Given under my hand and official signature. C. Blandford, Clerk."

Physical description. Might have obtained a pass from some mean white man or other. $20 reward offered.

Died, William Langham, native of Va, in his 78th yr, on May 10. Served & wounded in Revolutionary War. Came to Ga in 1788.
